Cockatiel are small, crested parrots which are widespread throughout the Australian
outback. They are popular pets since 1840s, and they are the ideal parrot to
choose for a novice owner. Varieties include Lutino (yellow), Albino, Pied,
Cinnamon, White-faced, Pearl and Silver.
They are suitable for a collection of several types of bird in an aviary; or keep in a large cage and allow free-flight exercise indoors. Keep two together for company. When they are obtained young, they quickly become tame. Males will sing tunes or whistle melodiously.
They feed on a balanced pellet food and, provide a mixture of sunflower and canary seed, millet, oats and hemp. Fresh water, cuttlefish bones and a mineral block should always be available. A variety of fresh food such as fresh fruits and vegetables should be provided.
Cockatiels breed prolifically, especially in an aviary. About 6 to 7 eggs are
incubated by the male and female cockatiels. The chicks start to hatch after
19 days, but the youngest often die. They leave the nest at 5 weeks, when their
parents are preparing for the next brood.
