Yellow budgerigars are recessive mutations of green birds in which the normal dark pigment is absent. There are no dark markings on the wings and head as there are in normal birds. Lutino budgerigars are similar, but have red eyes and pink feet.
Budgerigars should fly from their cage regularly. Birds that do not exercise become overweight and can suffer health problems such as heart attacks. Always shut all doors and windows, close curtains and cover all glass and mirrors to prevent accidents.
A cuttlefish bone is a source of calcium and helps to keep the beak trimmed. Grit is not needed, it can block the gizzard. Budgerigars need iodine in their diet, so attach an iodine mineral block to the cage bars. Seed bells and other toys help to prevent boredom.
The chicks are naked when first hatched; feathers start to grow after 8 days.
They are fledged at 4 weeks and leave the nest one week later. While the hen
is incubating the eggs, and for the first 2 weeks, she is fed by the male bird
– later he will feed the chicks as well.
