Lovebirds

Lovebirds are small parrots from Africa and Madagascar. There are 9 different species from which many color mutations have been bred. The Peach-faced, Masked and Fisher’s are the most popular species kept as cage birds. They screech loudly.

They are kept in a large birdcage or heated aviary with narrow-spaced bars. Lovebirds do not talk but will learn simple tricks. Swings, perches and other toys can be provided for them. All parrots, including budgies, are very intelligent and soon become bored without suitable environment.

Fresh water and pellets should be provided at all times. Cockatiels seeds mix can be given too. Blow empty husk from the seed bowl every day and refill. Provide fresh food such as fruits, vegetables with leaves, hard-boiled egg, rice and pasta.

They are called lovebirds because they are so affectionate. Couples mate for life and must always be kept as a pair. They will build nest from soft materials inside a wooden nest box. About 3 to 5 white eggs are incubated for 21 to 25 days; their parents feed the chicks for 5 weeks.
