Algae Problem in aquarium tank part 1

Algae are a primitive form of plant life that every aquarist will encounter whether he likes it or not. The problem with algae is that there is no agreement as to what constitutes a problem in the first place!

The scope for disagreement over the issue seems to be greater than for almost all other aspects of fish keeping. It is for this reason that I shall devote the next four weeks on this topic.

Admittedly, what constitutes a problem for a particular aquarist or under one set of circumstances is not necessarily seen as a problem by another aquarist or under a new set of circumstances. For example to most aquarium owners, green water represents a serious algae problem. However, if such conditions are provided for the fry of some species, such as mollies, growth can be quite spectacular. This situation is true if the algae bloom is due to too much light rather than chemical imbalance.

Now, let use imagine the normal conditions found in aquariums (whatever "normal" may means!) Some aquarist will regard the existence of encrusting green algae - in an otherwise clean tank with sweet smelling water as problem.

Such aquarist respond to this situation by pouring algaecides and detergents into their aquarium in an attempt to kill off the offending growth and could become quite depressed by the apparent stubbornness of these algae despite their best effort to get rid of them.
