:smash: Ok, order in the court!

I am tired of people having to put their beloved pets to sleep because they have no means of paying for vet bills, and because the vet figured "hey they don't have that kind of money so might as well tell them to put their pets to sleep" . Well, vote here and say what you think:

Yes
Ferrets and all other small pets need Med. Ins

No
they have no need for them?

it's either one choose wisely because I'm going to send an email to the pet insurance company with these votes. want to make a difference here's your chance, choose one of the two and state your reason why :teleport:

I choose YES!
ferrets have many many medical issues and need all the medical support that they need. They have cancer too you know! and like man and beast, cancer is a very painful thing to have.

I say yes that ferrets definately need medical insurance but unfortunately comapnies know what it will cost them to insure ferrets and noone wants that. So instead I have a ferret bank account so I know that I have the money for my baby if anything goes wrong. AND a vet that does payment plans when needed!

I agree with Ferretfan and have a very simmilar set up. A ferret fund is a great thing for any ferret owner to have for emergencies!!

Not all vets will give a bleak outlook if you do not have money though... at one point my husband and I went through a hard time... money was very hard to come by....when my ferret had an emergency My vet who would usually do payment plans for those with low funds acctually just let the charges go for most of the treatment!!!

I understand not many vets would do this!
But untill ferrets can be insured ...
with alot of looking around ..or if you know your vet well enough there are those who will set up payment plans for their patients with little money. Even if those vets ar a little out of the way... it really can be worth the trouble of the searching and driving a few extra miles for a good ferret vet!

I choose YES as well!

I don't have a ferret, but related to small animals...I personally would not get insurance for my rabbit. As other people have mentioned, I have a fund for emergencies that I don't allow myself to touch, no matter how desperate for cash I am! If I never need to use it, awesome, but if my bunny ever had a problem it's there.

However, even if I would not personally get insurance, I think that it should be an option available for those who want it. There should be an insurance company that covers small animals, and I would support any movement for it.

I posted this on the other thread too. There is health insurance for ferrets already. The company has pulled coverage for endocrine problems though so things like adrenal gland disease and insulinoma are not covered. You're much better off creating your own 'insurance' by creating a savings account with the money that you would have spent on the insurance.

I definitely vote yes for Ferret insurance. FULL coverage. I mean, just like cats or dogs, ferrets come down with all sorts of nasty ailments. Right now I have no clue what's going on with one of my little fuzzies. The biggest thing is the cost. I lost one of my ferrets about a year ago and when it was all said and done I'd also lost $1000. Not that she wasn't worth it and I know I'd do it again if I had the money. But that's just it...I don't and if I had insurance maybe that would make all our lives a little easier and less frustrating. Where I am a lot of the vets do not accept any sort of payment plan...they want the money before you leave their office. My vet (he says he sees ferrets so wish me luck...) will wait and cash your check when you say to. That's the extent of their payment plan. Even that's tough. FERRETS NEED PET INSURANCE, TOO!!!

Yes, Insurance would make a difference. We would all be able to get everyone what they need when they neeed it instead of trying to wait as long as you can.

So does that direct insurance insure smaller animals such as hamsters, for example.

Or how about Rabbits. Depending on how sick an animal is depends on how much the bill would be. Or I should say what needs to be done. So why not offer it to all animals. Snacks, rats, mice......etc.

Is there any insurance for rats?

I took my pet mouse to the vet recently.... the total was $156. The breakdown was something like this:

$56 for exam
$20 for take home medicine
$40 for in office medicine (nebulazation) sp?
$40 for rehydration shot.

She died the very next day... I think it was all too stressful for her. I would assume that a Rat would run a very similar amount... but that the chance for recovery would also be higher.

Part of the problem with Hamster and Mice (I would also assume Rats , Gerbils, and the other small rodents) is that by the time they show the symptoms of an illness, it is often too late to successfully treat them, they just have such fragile lives. It seems that once they get sick, they almost always pass away within a day or two...

I've got one little sick mousie right now... I've got her on medicine from the vet, but it always feels like a coin toss...

I posted this on the other thread, too. I called VPI to find out about insurance for my ferret and I was told they were covered. They also covered endocrine problems, diagnostics tests, and treatment. This only up to a certain amount but it is way better than nothing at all. I found them under www.petinsurance.com and the monthly payment is only $12. This is the only company I've found so far that will cover ferrets at all.

And my vote is yes. Insurance should be available for all pets because they are usually important to people and caring for them can be very expensive.

You need to get your fact straight since I called and spoke to a manager and they stated they don't cover Adrenal Surgury and Diabeties.

Might i add something ?
There IS a card called Care Credit..
Its a credit card alot of ppl can get from the vet office. True the interest rates are horrid.
But it was nice to have for a ferret that passed away anyways, but we knew we did all we could for him.
We'll probably be paying for it for years but when you got animals its nice to have!

The problem is if you don't have insurance, a savings account for your pets, or someone to borrow money from, you may one day be faced with the horrible decision of having to put your pet to sleep because you couldn't afford the vet bill. This recently happened to me. I did not have insurance or a savings account. I had recently been unemployed and had no one to borrow money from. I was forced to put my ferret to sleep because of financial issues which was the hardest decision I ever had to make. I would definitely recommend having a plan in case of something like this so you do not have to make an unnecessary sacrifice.

I guess what we find out in forums like this, is that everyone has their own opinions. I say what ever works for you, then continue to do it that way. I just when someone buys an animal for a pet and doesn't know the details on on expenses, medical bill forcast and also how to properly care for them. Like K10 once said, Research on the animal you are going to purchase can sometimes be a matter of life and death or a happy to a dreadful life. Do your research, and if not having a savings account or having insurance is your way to insure your pets health then do it the way you feel comfortable.

I wish there were an insurance company that would cover ferrets completely. Unfortunately, the only one that does, doesn't cover routine vet checks and shots, Adreanal Disease or Insulinoma, which as all of us ferret owners know, is the most common vet expenses for a ferret. <<sigh>>

I think that all animals should have insurance too. I have rabbits, guinea pigs and dogs. I would love to do insurance for them with co pays or no co pays. I dont like the ones with reimbursements at all. Insurance is good for anyone especaly rescues with many small animals of any kind.

Yes, LisaB there is insurance for ferrets as you mentioned. But as you stated they did remove cvrg for those conditions...I should know I USE to work there. Now, just to let you know NEVER EVER insure any of your pets with them. They do EVERYTHING they can to not pay a claim and when it's legit they take months to pay it by saying that medical records were not faxed in or this and that. My job was to get yelled at every day by upset customers that were waiting on their money, lots of them that needed the money to reimburse the vet for additional medical treatments because their pets had major medical problems like cancer. Eventually, I had to leave because I love animals too much to work for a company that did not value their lives and put pet owners through hell while their animals may be dying.

And yes, I agree there needs to be medical insurance for ferrets. Not only that there needs to be more pet insurance policies that work more like human medical insurance instead of auto insurance ie, deductibles and copays upon copays. Plus, why don't more jobs offer this has a benefit??? I'd swap my disability insurance for pet insurance anyway....or my freebie life insurance policy (I have my own which is much better than my works).
