I havn't had one, but i worked for a lady who did.
She had one pet chicken, and then decided it was lonley and got another. Her original chicken beat up the other chicken really bad. I was told you cannot put full grown chickens together, and that they have to be chicks together to be able to live together as adults.

All the chickens we had were egg layers, and we bought them as groups. i've always liked Chickens, and plan on having maybe 4 of them one day.

I've had pet chickens for about 6 years now. They're great especially if you raise them from chicks. Just make sure you got a predator free environment for them. Grown chickens (that weren't raised together), can occasionally get along if you're lucky. But most of the time they won't.

They're are a few good books on the subject, I forget the names but they're something like Backyard chickens... or raising chickens in your backyard.

Good luck! :)

Ps. A hen is a female chicken. A rooster is a male chicken. Also, many people don't realize that hens lay eggs about once a day (depending on season) whether there's a rooster around or not.

I would love to have a 'Rescue' Chicken but would one be happy if living alone? I would get a lot of love and do basicly what ever it wanted to (bar the late night parties of course lol)

It really depends on the chicken.
Each one has a different personality. Some depend completely on being around other chickens, while others are more independent.

If you would like just one chicken though, make sure you get her at a very early age. Spend alot of time with her and she'll love you to death.
There's nothing wrong with one chicken. In fact in many ways, it's better. A lot less mess and easier to take care of.

A word of caution though, chickens are preyed on by a great many animals. Do NOT just let your chicken roam around outside your house unsupervised, ESPECIALLY in the evening or after dark. Also, your neighbor's dog which would never hurt a fly, WILL go after your chicken if you're not careful. It happened to me. This dog had been hanging around our house and the chickens for years, just a really nice dog, never harmed any of the chickens at all. Then one morning it breaks into the yard and kills my favorite chicken. Just be careful, don't let that happen to you.

i would suggest getting 2 chicks (chickens)
i highly recommend getting them as chicks, after all they are cutest then :}
plus you get to watch them grow and boy they grow fast.

chickens are generally pretty easy to take care of too, so i wouldn't think having 2 is a problem.

chicken laws? like in regards to what?

I would guess there could be a Law in your area with keeping "Farm Animals" such as Chickens in suberban/city areas. I know where I used to live people couldn't keep goats, pigs or chickens as Pets. I lived in the Suberbs, and we had chickens in a coop for a little while (a week or so, they we're just bough for my gandparents farm, and were waiting to be picked up), I know we had to hide them in our garage. It was a fun time though as a kid getting to feed and play with chickens in my garage. lol

Yeah, that's what I was wondering. Anyone know where to go to find out what animals you're allowed to have in certain cities/states?

if your pet store sells chickens, then they should know the laws pertaining to them.

You should be able to call your city hall and ask about the Pet bylaws. Sometimes each city will have the city bylaws online on their web sites, i know ours does, i've looked up stuff there before.
