Yesterday my guinea pig had 5 babies and they were a little smaller than usual but that was barely noticeable. i also ran out of food yesterday but this morning i fed the mom some carrots to tide her over until i got home from school. when i came home i found 4 babies huddled together and when i looked for the 5th i found him under the newspaper chewed up but still alive. he died a few minutes later :'( when i examined the remaining four babies i noticed that every single baby had both of it's back legs chewed off. completely. :'( i dont know what to do this is so horrible i dont know if they will survive and if they do how will they get around like normal pigs? i cant get rid of them... im thinking about giving them up to The Animal Sanctuary in watkins glen that saves animals like these every day. can anyone give me advice on why these babies were mutilated? because the mother was hungry? or were they possibly sick? and will they survive with stubs for back legs? they're almost like horse's hooves they're walkin on. *sigh* ive been bawling about this ever since i got home please tell me what i can do. thank you.

I am so sorry about your loss. Did you examine the babies when they where born? Mother guinea pigs (and father) guinea pigs will not eat their young. Again I am so sorry for your loss. The fifth one, was he trampled? If you want to put them up for adoption please notify me. Also if you it would would be best for you to put the babies in that refugue you should. With the leg disability, if you keep them don't rearange things. If the legs get infected go straight to your veternarian. So sorry for your loss

I think it would be highly advisable that you bring your poigs to the vet. I never known of any pigs eating their young, and i doubt your mother/father pig have done so either. Guinea pigs can feed on carrots and is fine replacing your pellets for the time being.
Is this the first litter of your mother guinea pig?
Their legs were chewed off? How? Is there any blood flowing?
I am not sure if they are chewed off or are they born with it. If they are borned with it, they are most likely to be immature.
Please consult your local vet for professional help.

I have read that mothers may eat their young if it has been born deformed insome way.
The book also says that the sow may be very young and panics at the sight of her own offspring, she may be undernourished and has an inborn mechanism that tellers her she will be unable to nurse the babies, she may be frightened by the environment in which she is living...
From the Guide to Owning Guinea Pigs by Graham Edsel.

I don't think that she should put them to sleep. Yah, she should take them to the vet and get them examened but don't put them to sleep unless they are in any pain. If the mother keeps doing this, I would take the babies out and feed them your self.

ads, it's not at all selfish to try to fight to keep an animal alive!
