I have to get rid of my male degu since i found out the hard way that the other one is a female and i got the idea that maybe i could get them neutered but i don't know if its possible and if so how much would it cost.

Hi, i dunno the answer but i am thinking of getting either my male or female degus neutered, depending on the outcome off what sex their baby is and wanted to know how safe it is- I would rather not have to seperate them but i don't want to risk a death. Did you find out about it in the end? does any one else know anthing about it??

i called the vet to ask and it is possible but it is nearly $100 to get one done. if u do this it is better to get the female done because i was told that it makes them live longer. hope that helps you.

unfortunetly it costed to much for me so i ended up getting rid of the male and the baby cuz it was male and got another female. the first male didn't like me so i felt that was the only way.

$100!!!! better start saving! isn't it more risky to get the female done? thanks for getting back to me!

hi, just to let you know, i got my male degu castrated this week, it cost £50 but it was well worth it. i did alot of research and found there was less risk operating on the male as he doesnt have to be 'knocked out' for as long, that is the main risk in this op, but make sure you find an experienced vet. hope this helps

hi, just to let you know, i got my male degu castrated this week. . .

:p :yuck: :o Could we use a euphemism for "castrated"?! :D

So, why is this operation necessary?? (Other than if you have a male and female together and want to avoid babies).

the op isnt necessary unless you have mixed sexes in together. i got two new degus from a pet shop and they were sexed incorrectly so i had to get my boy done a.s.a.p! i think my female is pregnant already, but at least he will be around to help with the birth now.
