We have a 4 year old tabby that we got at 3yrs from a shelter. Not having much experience with cats, we didn't brush him too often, maybe twice a week (he doesn't like it), and now he's just way too fluffy, I think. He's one big ball of fur! I've heard not good stories about "clips for cats," and I know sedation is sometimes required. What I would like is just a trim to clean him up. Hairballs aren't too much of a problem, but his hair is taking over the house a bit and with summer coming, I'm concerned for his comfort.
My question is, should I go to our vet (whom have a grooming service) for the professional cut? He'll probably be less that pleased once it's over, but maybe it's best.
Is this something I could do at home with an electric rasor?!?
Any advice appreciated.
Signed,
New cat dad :king:

I've never attempted to clip a cat with an electric razor, but in my experience doing it with horses, even on that large surface area, with an animal standing still, it can get kind of funny-looking unless you really know what you're doing. Since you probably want something a little more...normal looking...for a house cat, I would recommend the trip to the groomer. She'll forgive you eventually ;)

I would go to the groomer. they will know how much to take off. plus they know how to handle animals when they are getting groomed.
let us know what you do :daisy:

Clipping a cat yourself is no fun (i know from experiance, and my kitties very strong too). If you want to take your cat to be groomed at your vet, make sure to ask if there is a trained (designated/experianced) groomer. In some of the Clinics I worked at, They pretty much had anyone available to groom the animals, whether it was me, a practicum student or a young teen who volunteered.
If your cat is real furry, you may just need one real good grooming once a month (or less, depending how often you keep it up), That's what our cat needs (persian), and if you find someone who will do a proper job, it will last quite a while. You just need to brush all the under hair out (the part theat sheds).
I prefer taking our Cat to a groomer, One because I'm allergic, Two he hates being groomed, And i rather he hate the groomer then me :p
Good Luck!
