I've had pairs of gerbils, and have also had one rescue female (introducing her didn't work), Having two gerbils is great because they love having a buddy to play with and groom. But they also love to jump on my hand and climb around on me. So really your gerbil won't choose one over another. As long as you teach them you're their friend, and not scary.
Hand tamming with treats works the best.

:D Those are my Gerbils, looking up is Chevy and the black is Blazer. These are my first Males (all my previous Gerbils were females), I find they are alot messier then any of my females (my cousins males were kinda messy too).
