Hi

Martina, my gerbil, had pups this week, on tuesday morning. right now my room is crowded and I have here the smaller cages, the bigger at my apartment. It's crowded cause I had to separate her from her previous litter and I thought they were all females, but when I rechecked them I have a male, so I had to put him apart from the rest (he's sharing the big 20g with his sisters, but with a division)...Well, the thing is that Martina and Kuzco are with the litter in one of the smallest cages. I had the big one for Martina and Kuzco, but had to use it for this purpose... well, tomorrow (Sunday) I'm leaving cause I have classes on monday. Obviously less than a week old pups can't do a 3 hour drive to my apartment... So I'm leaving Martina and Kuzco and my dwarfs, who also had a litter the day before. Now, the cage were Martina and Kuzco is has a small water bottle (the ones that look like test tubes), the other bottles I have get into the litter and that would cause it to leak. Nobody here will fill the bottle for me cause everybody at my house is afraid of the gerbils... I looked for a bigger bottle that fitted the cage, but they were out of QQ bottles... So I was thinking of moving them to the bigger cage before I leave... now... my problem is that I'm afraid the they forget the babies on the curiosity and frenetic digging, jumping, chewing that arises the fact of being in a new environment... Martina doesn't have a definitive nest... she changes them from place to place every hour and sometimes the look to be stray around the cage. Sometimes she's nursing 3 and Kuzco has 3 and then they change. Sometimes they are in pairs... sometimes they are all together... So I can't say "I'll take the whole nest and put it in this corner..."

What should I do? should I change them? I'll go out tomorrow again to look for a new bottle, but I need to decide on something before I go...

I hope someone replies soon...

I don't think I would move them to a new cage at this point with the pups so young. I would be concerned about the same things as you and wouldn't want to upset their new family. I would definitely get a bigger water bottle for them if at all possible, or maybe even add one or two of the smaller ones if you need to. Hope this helps.
