I apologise now if this post is vague.
My hamster has developed a bald patch on her back for no apparent reason. Nothing has changed in her routine and the patch is in an area that I'm sure she can't reach. I've had a good look and can't see any mites, etc.
Her temperament is still the same and she is in otherwise good health. She's 20 months'old.
Thanks for any help.

Hello,
If your hamster couldn't reach the part, i think it could be mites or lices.
But 20 months old is about 2 years of age. It is quite old then. i am not too sure if hamster drop their fur when a certain age reaches.
Did you bring her to the vet or seek advise from any vet through the phone?
Anyway, i have almost the same problem as you too. But differs a little. I am going to post my problem up too. http://petshub.com/ubb/frown.gif
Do keep us informed.

Thanks for your reply. I'll have to take her to the vet. I can't see any mites or lice and the cage is kept very clean. Maybe they lose fur as they get older??
I've seen your other post. Mine's a "nagger" too!!
Thanks
Yinx

Hello Tony,
Don't think u have anythg to worry abt. My Syrian (22 mths old) has developed a bald patch on his butt as well. I think this comes naturally with age, & is not caused by mites/parasites.

Hello Tony and Yinx,
Oh, so my guess is correct. Hamsters do drop fur when a certain age reaches. I do not want San to go bald when she gets old. Poor thing. http://petshub.com/ubb/frown.gif Yes, San has a bald head now. Silly girl.
Yours is a nagger too? So i guessing you must have hear those wire-biting noises everynight too? Or am i the only one who hears those noises?
What is your hamster's name?

Thank you all for your replies.
Naturally, if I'm still concerned it's off to the vet I go!
My young children named our hamster "Squeaky".
Thanks again.

Hi Tony,
An imbalanced diet or the wrong bedding (cedar shavings) may cause bald patches too. If u're certain there's no skin infection, nor diet or bedding, maybe u can try including brewer's yeast into squeaky's diet.
Someone recommended that a pinch of yeast be included in the hamster diet for everyday 2 weeks than slowly tapered off to 3 days/week for 2 weeks, then 2 days/week for another 2 weeks. It works for some hamsters and not for others. If u need details of the person i can e-mail that to u.
Here's to quick fur growth. http://petshub.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
