Hey...
The weather is suddenly getting hot/sticky/humid, and if I'm feeling uncomfortable, I doubt Snoopi feels any better. She hasn't showed signs of being hot, she's still curled up under her blanket with bedding surrounding her, but I want to be sure that when she gets hot, she can cool down.
So I'm needing advice. With Snickers I pointed the fan toward his cage, but the fan can't move over that far and their are no outlets near the cage. I turned the fan on anyway, so at least some air can circulate- even though it IS warm air. Her water bottle felt warm so I filled it up with cold water, the coldest I could get it. I also gave her a piece of celery that was kind of moist and cold, and thought she would like that.
Now I'm wondering...Could I take a Kleenex or a piece of toilet paper and put cold water on it, and stick it in her cage? That way if she's warm she can lay on it. Will it work? I'm stumped on what to do. Any tips that you all have will be greatly considered.
And just so you know what we're dealing with, the temperature is 88 degrees fahrenheit and the humidity is 36%. I know some people have it hotter where they are, but just yesterday it was sort of chilly. Plus it's about the hottest time of the day.

I would be afraid that if you put a moist kleenex in her cage, Snoopy might get a respiratory infection... you should always keep them dry... Why don't you give her a piece of frozen veggie or fruit. I give mine frozen carrot and they seem to like it, so Snoopy might like it.

OK thanks! She must have gotten hot, she moved up to the "petting zone" and there is nothing up there so it wouldn't make her hot.
I have another question. I'm under a tornado watch, and the weather is getting REALLY bad. Will Snoopi be OK? Her cage is a little near the window, and I'm such a worry wart!

I don't know about tornados... we don't get them on PR... but we have hurricanes... we have some time to prepare... so.. it's quiet different... I really don't know how to answer...

A good idea for the heat is to get a tile (from a hardware store comes in all kinds of sizes from a couple cents to more) you can freeze it and put it in her cage. it will be cold and she can sleep on it.
Someone else gave me this idea but i got an air conditioner instead because it just got like an oven in this room.

Hi! I read somewhere that you can fill up an empty milk jug with water and freeze it, and put it in the cage and as it slowly melts it gives off cold air, and the buns can lay next to it or lick it or whatever to stay cool. I plan on doing this in the summer for my buns! :bunny:

If I remember right, a pet store I used to visit put water bottles of ice and cold water in a giant open-air "cage" they had for their dwarf hamsters. The hammies would get beneath them or snuggle right up to them and sleep.

Thanks everyone! Well, the hot weather is gone for now! Quite amazing, yesterday it was about 90 degrees and today its only about 55.
We didn't actually have a tornado, it came close though. My house is at the edge of the city, so the one that we are almost in had a tornado but surprisingly it didn't hit us. Snoopi seemed a little freaked about the whole thing. She would stand on her back paws (like when they hear something) and she wouldn't move for the longest time. She's fine now. She was also acting strange last night. Is it possible that this could have anything to do with the storm? My cat seemed creeped, too.

Ceramic tiles you have left in the freezer for a day. Line the bottom of the habitat. Turn up the a/c too.

..I have used cleaned washed bricks to cool of my little guys..I place it in the freezer to chill and in the cages is goes..gives them something cool to lay down on... also it's good for keeping their nails trim as they climb aboard on it.. also have used in their cages the tiles and water bottle filled with water then frozen..works well... :daisy:
..also it's good to keep the curtains drawn in the room where the are kept to keep the sunlight out and helps keep the room cooler...and in return keeps the little ones cooler...
..if there is a room that stays cooler in the summer time it might help to put the hamster in that room until the warm weather is over.....curtains drawn and away from the window..plenty of fresh water..and its important that they have plenty of cool water and helps to give fruits and veggies to them so they don't dehydrate...
