Rodney's just woken up and i noticed on his right hand side his fur was very wet, i can't handle him to have a proper look yet but though closer inspection i saw something black under the wet patch, mebbe dried blood, i am unsure.
He has a cage which has 3 levels and i have noticed he always goes to the middle level and had a kind of fit and he is rubbing on the bars and stuff, he never does this anywhere else in his cage, he is eating a drinking fine...
At first i just thought he had brushed past his drinking bottle but the patch looks to wet and big for that so he must of done it himself.

Anyone got any suggestions, i know hammies can get skin infections, but how if he is never near any other hammies?

Please help as i am worried and as i haven't really handled him before ( wish i could) i can't hold him and have a better look.

Thanks

what kind of hamster is he? if he is a syrian, you may be seeing the gland on his hips, male Syrians have a "wet spot" each side of their hips that are really gland secretions. THey will rub these glands n things to mark their scent on to mark their territory.

Yes he is a Syrian, i checked it later and hsi fur had dried, it looked like he had a really bad itch there tho and was scratching with his mouth... but as i said before i dunno, thats why i asked on here :)

Thanks for ure help SapphireWolf :) I'll watch him tonite too.

Sounds to me he may be scent marking his cage or other areas. My male hamster also has a good lick of the hip scent glands then rubs himself against parts of his cage, this can involve shuddering and rolling on his back briefly,he also does this out of his cage, sometimes along my leg when he's under the bedcovers running around, lol.
