I have a new Teddy Bear Hamster... I've had her for about 2 weeks. I've never had a Hamster from a pet store before... I always had the "hand me down" hamsters from kids who didn't take care of them or abused them.

I had a number of teddy bear hamsters who had fairly short hair on the top and long hair along their sides.

My new Hammy was labeled as a teddy bear hamster and she has the traditional look, grey and white mix. But her hair is the same length all over.

My assumption is that it will grow out on the sides as she gets older. Is anyone familiar with this? My guess is that she is between 6 - 8 weeks old... but the pet store employees had no idea of her age when I bought her. But I don't know anything about how teddy bear hamsters hair changes through their development.

On a side note... I'm surprised how fast she seems to be growing... she has filled out in the past two weeks and seems to be longer too... very exciting!

Yes, the hair will grow as the hamster gets older. When they are very young their hair isn't too long. Mine got really long hair around his butt all the time. It used to get notted up a lot so I used to trim it for him.

Hello Halogengirlie...I wanted to say Male Long Haired Hamsters will get those long skirts of fur along the bottoms..the females will only get little tuffs at their rear ends and one on each side behind their necks..Male Long Haired Hamsters fur grows longer then the females fur ... :daisy: ..so u might see some growth as she ages ..but if u had males in the past and they had that long coat along the bottom.. she won't get as long as that tho...some longer tuffs at each side u will see...

..which u can use a baby brush or a tooth brush to brush out any litter caught up in it...:)

You're correct! My previous hamsters were males... I never gave that much thought before!

Thanks for the information!
