We had a teady bear hamster for a year and a half until he had an unfortunate accident. It was really sad, my three year old daughter dropped him and he broke his back. He died two days later. We all sobbed for about two hours straight. Especially the three year old because she knew it was her fault. She was heart broken. Anyway. We went and got a new hamster of course. This time we got a short hair (standard brown mix) and it is a girl this time. She is the best hamster I have ever had. She is way friendlier to the kids. She loves to take food out of their fingers and pack her cheeks solid. The kids get such a kick out of that. Is it the breed do you think that is nicer, or the fact that it is a girl instead of a boy? What is your experience for temperment in hamsters? The teady bear hamster we had kept getting his long fur stuck in his wheel. he used to get a little bald spot on the top of his back. Poor little thing. The short fur is so much nicer. It seems so much softer and cleaner looking all the time.

Teddy bear hamsters(Long haired) are the same thing as Syrian hamsters, just as are black bear(Black) hamsters and panda bear hamsters(colored like a panda). Hamsters just all have different personalities.

I agree, hamsters all have different personalities. Whether they are syrians or dwarfs, male or female, you just never know. My friend told me I should never get a female hamster because they are just mean. I took her advice, as she knew more about them than I did. So my first two hamsters were males because I didn't want one that was going to be mean. Well, for my third hamster I wanted a male again because my first two boys were wonderful. The pet store only had female syrians, but they had male dwarfs. I didn't want a dwarf, so I got a female. And I love her to bits and she is just as wonderful, if not more, than my boys.

Point is, people can tell you that females are better, but that isn't true. And sometimes it seems that one gender is better because they had a better personality than one you had before of a different gender. The only thing I don't like about my female is when she goes in heat. The smell is just too much and not pleasant.

Hehe, sorry I wrote a bit!

I have had males and females and the girls are sometimes a little more fiesty than the guys. The males seem a bit more laid back and lazy(Hmnn sounds familiar).I've been lucky they all had good natures,it's just down to luck sometimes.
