i have a friend, and he has a hamster.
he spits on it, fills the cage with coca-cola bottle caps(like its literally filled)
and he smokes, and drinks coke and then spits brownish spit on him

will this harm the hamster in any way?

Most likely, yes. Is there any way you can take the hamster away?

Satanicat

well it's not my hamster, so no.
hes had it for about half a year now, i just dont see how its still alive, and he says its fine and it doesnt hurt it at all

I don't know what exactly would happen to the hamster, but if smoke gets into the cage then that can cause a problem with the hamster's breathing. I really don't know what else to say other than he really should not have a hamster.

If it were me. I'd ask him, "How would you like to have to live in bottle caps all the time? How about getting spit on all the time? YOu want me to drink some coke and spit on you?" :redhot: I wouldn't be able to stand this person, people like that make me want to unleash the anger that gets built up in me when I think about things like that:splat:. How in the world could someone do this to a poor innocent creature who cannot defend itself? Maybe you could convnce your friend to give you the hamster, or, you could call your animal authorities and get the hamster taken away from him. :worried:

I don't know how old the person you're talking about is, if he is young try to talk to his parents. If not try talking to him yourself or get the SPCA involved. No hamster should have to live like that, he doesn't get a choice in the matter.

He spits on it! :splat: That right there can hurt her when she trys grooms to get it off. Why in the world dose he put bottel caps in the cage!? :kaioken:

Anyway, if it was my friend I whould just take the hamster and run, but I usually don't do things the right way, so try calling the SPCA.

I agree with everything everyone else has said. Why does he even have a hamster? :splat:

Maybe when he's gone you could go steal it. But you really should get the SPCA involved.

First of all hamsters clean themselves like cats and shouldn't be drinking coke much less this guy's spit, but more importantly why in the world would anyone do this to any animal? He doesn't seem like a very nice person. I know that this person is your friend and all and sometimes it's hard to say something to people you know like that, but think about that poor little hamster. Even if the coke wouldn't hurt him, if he treats it that way with you there, how does he treat it when left alone, and if he is doing things like that then he doesn't care about the hamster at all. I would take the hamster from him and if you don't want it for yourself then try to find him a home. I would be more than happy to take him.

I just can't see how anyone could hurt an animal, especially one that is so small. If any of my friends would hurt an animal(intentionally), I couldn't be their friend anymore because everytime I'd see them or think about them, I'd remember the poor animal they hurt, and I'd get so mad :redhot: :worried:

I think this post is BS. Just to get all the animal lovers riled up.
Notice how this is the first and only post from this person?

Another lame attempt to get attention......

[COLOR=Purple]I feel so sad reading about the poor hamster all alone with a mean owner. If he thinks its not annoying/hurting the hammy he needs to get his facts straight. Firstly those coke lids can be very sharp and dangerous, my cousin gave Toblerone her hamster one and he cuts his mouth, poor baby!
Anyway I honestly don't know how that guy can do that to a hamster and not care less!

If people really need to abuse animals, they can get a stuffed animal. NO animal deserves that kind of treatment. Not even a spider, and this is coming from someone with arachnophobia.

I really hope this is just a post for attention, because that poor hamster deserves so much better.

Thats kind of mean, Andrea S15.
All this person did was come on for advice because they were worried about the welfare of a pet.
Ye maybe it was there first post,
Oh so now you decide what a person can type in their first post!
Your the one typing on this post and giving attention, if you don't want to,
Wel Good for you!

lol....

Most people who ask questions like as there first and ONLY post, and do not post again come here onto the board to get pet lovers riled up. I've read it in many sections, Remember "Dogmolester", crap like that. It's a pattern.
This same person has not posted a reply, AND if this was a true post, why wouldn't they just take the animal away? why would anyone in there right mind think it's ok for an animal to live in that kind of habitat? Common sense people.

As is proven day in and day out, common sense skips people rather regularly. Yes, this original post is suspiciously lacking in common sense. However, consider the following...

The original poster may not know anything about Hamsters, other than how cute they are. This friend of hers could have told her that Hamsters like things to dig around in. Thus there is a reason for coca cola caps to be overflowing from the cage. He could even go so far as to claim that he's being good to the environment by re-using bottle caps.

To my knowledge, spitting on a Hamster is not immediately harmful. Oh, it's completely purposeless, and likely cruel in intent, but does it really harm the Hamster? I wouldn't do it, but I'm still not so sure that saliva is harmful to Hamsters. (I could look this up...but I don't plan on spitting on Hamsters, so it's not really a concern for me. :p)

Whether coke-contaminated saliva is bad/harmful to Hamsters, I don't know. However, I don't think coke is even good for humans to consume, so for that reason, I would say it's bad for Hamsters.

As for smoking... Some people are still in denial about the harm smoke and second-hand smoke to humans. Some people tend to think animals are an alien life form, and so what harms us may not harm them. Combine that with the likely excuses this original poster has been given about the Hamster's treatment, and I think we can see why they are unsure of how bad a situation the Hamster is in.

It seems to me that they feel intuitively, and in their gut, that the way this Hamster lives is bad. But they may not have Hamster experience, and their friend obviously does (by owning one,) so their common sense, gut instinct, intuition, whatever, is conflicting with knowing this friend of theirs SHOULD know what's best for his animals. And even if it's not the best way for a Hamster to live, and they know this, they may just not be sure if it's exactly harmful to their health and overall welfare.

Worse case scenario? This person is here to rile you up. Do you take the bait? No. Give the person reasons why the hamster should not live this way or be treated this way. Then the worst thing is you may have wasted a few minutes on the possibility of helping a Hamster out.

Best case scenario? This person's feelings and thoughts are waring with eachother and they're unsure of what to do. You spend a few minutes giving useful info and encouraging advice. They then turn around and help out a Hamster.

By the way, if the above hasn't answered the question "why wouldn't they just take the animal away?" think on this... It'd be breaking the law to remove that Hamster from it's home. Sure, it's a bad environment for the Hammy to be in, and it needs to be treated better. But it's still against the law to steal someone's pet. It's far better to get someone like the ASPCA involved, rather than breaking the law. They could get caught, get in trouble, and the hamster could be returned. Who wins in that situation? No one.

If you take the law into your own hands, other people, essentially, have the right to do so as well... Bad things start happening when people take the law into their own hands...

All I can say is maybe you realizing this isn't the life this hamster was intended for maybe you could make this person a cash offer for this little life. I'm sure he'd jump at the chance for the cash over this pet cause it seems this little life has little or no meaning to him. If anything talk to your own parents they might be able to help step in and save this little guy/gals life with your friend none the wiser. I hate to think of this poor little guy or gal suffering like this each and every day. I'm sure its eating at you as it is cause you made a post. Please let us know if you are able to save this little hamster. I am hoping for the best for it and hope someone can save it.

I have a huge aquarium like 65-100 gallons and I wonder if you can put different breeds of hamsters together (the same size) as long as there is enough room? Also how many (max) could I put in there? The cage is 4' by18" I don't know how many gallons. I have already had a hamster, but I will take all the help i can get!

thanks!

Sounds like your aquarium is 55-65g (unless it's really tall) You can't put different breeds of hamsters together, no matter how big the cage is. That cage can hold 1 syrian or several dwarves. I can't tell you how many, cause I don't know. The dwarves have to be all of the same species (campbells, winter whites, chinese or rovorobski) The only different species of hamsters that tolerate each other are campbells and winter whites, becuase they are very similar. But, you should not put them together anyway.

If you want to have different colors/variety in your tank, I suggest that you learn a lot about gerbils and you can put several males in that gallon, each of a different color and all beautiful. Of course, gerbils, even though are social, are also territorial, so you have to learn how to introduce them and stuff.

I want to get a small animal( guinea pigs, ferret,or hamster I might consider something else but i don't think i could get ust to a rat. SOrry you guys!) What is ya'lls favorite small animal overall? I have had just about everything(but not a ferret or GP) but recently have considered a ferret but providing for those can get expensive! I thought od getting a GP but the hay and all in my room would drive my parents insane!YES, I am a teenager but please don't treat me like a child !

Why can you only have one hamster in a HUGE cage? I might get a bear hamster from a petstore, but I would rather adopt!

please help me out all ideas open!! luv ya'

Hehe, no one will treat anyone like a child! After all, I'm one myself!

Only one hamster can be in that cage if it is a syrian hamster, because they are strictly solitary and two of them would most likely fight to the death.

Now, who said rats aren't cool!? I've never had one, but after reading about them they are now my favorite rodent...

Anyway yeah ferrets are pretty expensive. I've never had a GP but they are pretty cute. The hay probably wouldn't be an issue either, because it would only be in the cage and if I'm correct you don't have to put a lot in there.

Syrian hamsters are all the large ones. And no Syrian hamster can be housed together. I really wish they could though. . .

I wish they could too...I love syrians, but I'd never have more than one or two because that could end up to be a lot of cages.

That is sick. If it is a joke - it is not clever or funny. If it is not a sick joke, why are you friends with such a horrible person? Do your parents know what is happening? Do their parents know what is going on? If they do not have time (which would be very irresponsible of them), is there not a teacher you can go to? Can the moderator not find out more, because surely this is animal cruelty, and against the law. Can we as human beings just stand by and let this kind of behaviour continue.
