Hi,
I live in Austria at the border to Germany and I can't get any aspen shavings either.
In America the vegetation is different to the Europen or Central European vegetation.
Here most forests aren't aspen forests, that is probably why we can only get other shavings than aspen shavings. If aspen grows here it is rather rare.
The shavings you can buy here are made out of different pines.
I had to write to a few producers of shavings to get that info as it isn't
written on the packs.
Perhaps the shavings in England are even made of different wood than those in Germany and Austria?!
I would use the wood shavings you can get, they should be fine!

May I ask why you just want to use aspen?

Hi moa, I rescue small rodents, hamsters, mice etc. and have read up on aspen shavings and they are better than pine and of course cedar. I would like to provide the best if I can, if I cannot locate aspen in theis country, then I will have to forget all about aspen.

Hi Wendy,
I think it is very good that you want to provide the best you can for your animals.
There are other beddings available here which are very good too but also a lot more expensive.
Occasionally I use granulated corn cob bedding. These are definetely not toxic but some ppl do not recommend them because mold builds up more easily with corn cob than with wood shavings. This has never happened to me though. The best thing about them is that they are virtually dust free.
The other wood shavings I can buy here are made out of beech. These shavings are again very expensive.
Perhaps you can buy other types of bedding in GB too, that are as good as aspen.

Couldn't you buy from on-line major companies and have it shipped? I don't know the costs of such things, but aspen bedding is so light and doesn't exactly need "fragile" shipping requirements!
Try www.petsmart.com (http://www.petsmart.com) and go into the small animals dept. There is a subsection of bedding/nesting. I imagine their customer service could help you since it is a USA based company.
If you still have no luck, let me know. Maybe I could help? I am in US and aspen bedding is abundant here.

Hey Mitch,
Pine and Cedar will kill your hammy down the line.. please change it to Carefresh or Aspen. They will develop breathing problems, Please change... very dangerous!!

Cedar kills and pine gives resparitry problems.
Other shavings you can get here are beechwood - no aspen. I use horse bales of beechwood and ash shavings and Bob Martins Recycled Cat Litter (like carefresh but no dust or smell and cheaper)
