Odie in the new upcoming Garfield movie or Odie in the comic?

I haven't seen the trailer of the upcoming Garfield movie yet. Are both breeds different? I thought they should have the same breed for the comics and the movie. If it's all right with you, what breed are them both? Thanks!

Well, from what I recall, they appear to be very different. The problem with cartoons is they often take liberties that can't be taken in real life. For example, Scooby Doo is a brown Great Dane with black patches. I've never seen a Great Dane in real life with those colors. Most kennel clubs wouldn't allow a Dane with those colors, even if one existed. Snoopy is a white and black Beagle, but I've never seen a Beagle that color before. They normally have three colors.

Also, I have not gotten a good look at the Odie in the movie yet, so I can't recall what he looks like to me.

The Odie in the comic, however, always gave me the impression of a Hound or Hunting dog. I don't know if they ever told his breed, though. I'm just guessing.

Hey, what do you mean "most kennel clubs wouldn't allow a Dane with those colors, even if one existed?"

Kennel Clubs have accepted a certain standard for each individual breed. Each breed not only has to be between a certain height, certain weight, must have a certain type of body type, etc., but they must also be certain colors. The wrong colors can get a dog disqualified from shows, among other things. The accepted colors for Great Danes are thus:

Color, Markings and Patterns
Brindle--The base color shall be yellow gold and always brindled with strong black cross stripes in a chevron pattern. A black mask is preferred. Black should appear on the eye rims and eyebrows, and may appear on the ears and tail tip. The more intensive the base color and the more distinct and even the brindling, the more preferred will be the color. Too much or too little brindling are equally undesirable. White markings at the chest and toes, black-fronted, dirty colored brindles are not desirable.

Fawn--The color shall be yellow gold with a black mask. Black should appear on the eye rims and eyebrows, and may appear on the ears and tail tip. The deep yellow gold must always be given the preference. White markings at the chest and toes, black-fronted dirty colored fawns are not desirable.

Blue--The color shall be a pure steel blue. White markings at the chest and toes are not desirable.

Black--The color shall be a glossy black. White markings at the chest and toes are not desirable.

Harlequin--Base color shall be pure white with black torn patches irregularly and well distributed over the entire body; a pure white neck is preferred. The black patches should never be large enough to give the appearance of a blanket, nor so small as to give a stippled or dappled effect. Eligible, but less desirable, are a few small gray patches, or a white base with single black hairs showing through, which tend to give a salt and pepper or dirty effect.

Mantle--The color shall be black and white with a solid black blanket extending over the body; black skull with white muzzle; white blaze is optional; whole white collar is preferred; a white chest; white on part or whole of forelegs and hind legs; white tipped black tail. A small white marking in the blanket is acceptable, as is a break in the white collar.

Any variance in color or markings as described above shall be faulted to the extent of the deviation. Any Great Dane which does not fall within the above color classifications must be disqualified.

As you can see, they don't allow brown with black at all. You have to wonder why the artist chose to make Scooby those colors.

I was thinking the same. 8) Anyway... he's cute...

Of course... Odie says that he doesn't know why we all think that dog is cute, since he's the only cute Odie around... He has a really big ego...

The Odie in the comics doesn't look like any breed I know, but I agree with Roz that he vaguely reminds me of a Hound of some sort with the floppy ears. I think Davis just drew a caraciture of a dog and didn't bother about breed. The Odie in the movie looks like a terrier, maybe a Jack Russell? Wire haired variety?

Roz, Beaes do come in bi-color, but usually if they're two colors it's white and brown or liver. Mostly they are tricolor though. I agree, I've never seen a black and white Beae. Actually, the only dogs I can think of that come in black and white are Dalmations and Border Collies and Shelties and Papillons. Anyone else have any to throw in?

Great Danes, Great Pyrenees, Newfoundlands, Cocker Spaniels, Springer Spaniels, Chihuahuas, Chinese Crested, Boston Terriers, Belgian Draft Mastiffs, Australian Shepherds, McNabs (I think,) and there are likely more dogs that come in Black and White.
