You obviously are not going to take any advice on separating the hamsters. It will lead to fighting, injury or death. It's just a pity there are still irresponsible people out there who don't care what happens to their animals.

Maybe you don't see a problem now but I assure you you will see a problem sooner or later. Even in a Syrian's natural habitat a Syrian is a loner by nature and only makes physical contact with another Syrian to mate and after the mating is done the male needs to hightail it on outta there to avoid mutilation and/or death by the female he just mated with. Syrians crave solitude. They don't crave the company of other Syrians. Keeping Syrians together is risky business and the sign of an irresponsible owner. Also don't breed hamsters with unknown genetic histories. And if you are willing to allow Syrians to live together you probably are clueless to the genetic histories of both the male and the female. Breeding just for the sake of breeding is an extremely selfish act.

With being on so many hamster boards in the years.. I still run across those who think they will beat the odds, and they have the only magic potion of keeping them together without fighting or killing each after they reach the age of needing their own cage *Alone* and will not listen no matter what.
I’m sure most of us would love to have Syrians live together in complete harmony and keep each other company and to wake up and share sunflower seeds together...but this is Not possible as you are aware of now... So whatever thoughts you have of those two living together happily ever after should be chucked out the window and do the right thing by putting them each in THEIR own cages now...
.. myself..I don’t know of any magic potion or strategy of making these to live together within peace and harmony without trying to kill each other. I would highly recommend you Seperate them now...We, who are advising you it is a very dangerous to keep two Syrians together have the best interest at heart on behalf of all *Hamsters*..
What purpose does it serve us to make statements against keeping two Syrians together? We care for our hamsters or why would we be here on a hamster board trying to help you out on how to take care of your hamsters and answer your Questions the best we can? We have nothing better to do with our time? We, who say that Syrians who have reached the age of needing to be separated and need to be in their own cage *Alone* have the best intentions at heart for these little guys and are trying to protect as many hamsters as we can by preaching the same thing over and over. By doing so ...we only hope that it may get through some people’s heads and to save as many innocent hamsters we can who’s fate is at the mercy of their owners who believe that two Syrians can live in complete harmony for the rest of their lives. Not so!

I just posted this on the board I'm on a few days ago....Hoping it will get the message across to people who think like you..So going to post it here as well..
Lets hope this is a wake up call to you and does those poor little ones right...
I was looking through my hamster pictures and came across one of mine who I rescued from people a few years back.. who the owners thought 2 Syrians living together would keep each other company and Get along Great..Not so!
She came to me missing one of her eyes and beat up bad..the owner didn't see nothing wrong with keeping them together for so long as they got along fine she said..Then out of the blue this one was attacked by the other one..Poor thing... lost her eye.. but neverless she was a great pet..so friendly and not a care in the world..so happy I got her out of that home and into mine..
Thought I would share this..and to say "Never Keep 2 Syrians Together no matter how great u think they get along..one day u never know?...as with this one..

Here's the thing. The people who insist that Syrians can live together and actually get along don't realize that they can't stand watch/guard 24/7 and while they sleep their hamsters could be doing battle since the night is their most active time being the nocturnal creatures they are. Syrian hamsters are fierce warriers and will fight until one or both are mutilated or dead. Don't give them this opportunity. Let them live alone as nature intended.

Do you know how many hamsters probably die because "they look happy now"? What you're doing is SO irresponsible. I feel extremely bad for those poor critters, because who knows when one or both will die, just because you won't separate them.
I have to wonder why you won't separate them? It's not going to hurt you, and it will make the hamsters MUCH happier, and give them a longer life, too. If you want to keep hamsters together, why did you get syrians? The fact that you are telling us you are keeping them together, and ignoring what we are saying, is so sad. Why do you want to hurt them?
One day they are going to fight. They look fine, but the CAN NOT live together. Anything that happens to them is completely your fault and totally unforgiveable.

Boovila, you should edit that and watch your language
a little bit. I'm REALLY mad too that he/she won't take our advice! Looks like we have another "Shadow Hamster" on our hands.... Anyone remeber that horrible, stupid person?
Well I agree with lilsnoopydog. She said the right stuff and she watched her language.

I don't understand how anyone could be so irresponsible.

If anyone knows who you are you should be reported to the ASPCA and Humane Societies for sadistic abuse of animals. Perhaps the moderator can help in that.
Syrians should never be kept together.

Some weak sick people enjoy abusing animals. It makes them feel powerful.
I suggest people report this person to the moderator, and if the mod has an address, or ISP we can track, he/she be reported to the ASPCA where he/ she lives.

The original poster is not some sick sadistic person just because they honestly believed they could beat the odds. Perhaps they are ignorant, but no, I don't even think that is the case. The problem was not that they were sick, abusive, or even ignorant. It was that they thought they knew better. Yes, that can be a problem, but they're not all the names I've seen thrown in their general direction as a result of their strong will to prove everyone else wrong about Syrians.
You gotta admit, it would be nice if they could live together, and be happier that way, right?
What good does it do, attacking them in such force? If you thought it was helping, you're wrong. If anything, it set your work and everyone else's work back. When you treat someone like this in an attempt to make them understand the truth of the situation, you just make them more defensive about their position. You make them want to protect their ideas, and prove you wrong even more. You end up encouraging them to be close-minded.
Why are you going out of your way to punish this person now that they have righted their mistake? What, no second chances? We give second chances to animals, who don't even go through the same sort of changes we do. People can change. People can be educated, informed, enlightened. People can right some wrongs. Someone CAN go from being a not-so-great pet owner to a top notch pet owner.
If we went out of our way to persecute everyone who ever didn't know how to properly care for an animal, and keep them from ever having animals, we'd have far more homeless animals. If you think shelters are overflowing now, just wait until the standards of pet ownership are so high that if you ever made one mistake, even when you learned from that mistake and made things right, you couldn't own a pet again.
I'm not saying animal abusers and neglecters shouldn't be punished. I feel quite the opposite. In this instance, to our knowledge, this person only made one mistake. And, as long as they're honest, they've fixed things. So why are you going out of your way to try to punish them?
How can you possibly expect them to come to us or anyone else in search of the right answers to any further problems or questions if you completely annihilate them here and now, over one mistake? They're far less likely to reach out for help if they make a mistake now, having been treated this way.
This behavior does NOT help.
Honestly, I'm disappointed.

Once again, Roz has said it all!
I know I didn't say the best things, but so many people think they can keep syrians together. And the fact that this was the second post on this subject made it worse, even after in the first post we all said to separate them.
But it's true, all of us here have had an animal that we didn't give the "best" care to. After mistakes we learned what was better, and we have to give credit for trying. You may not try the best or smartest things, but the fact is, you are TRYING to do your best and you are still learning.
Ahem, I'm done now.

okay, i had 2 syrians living together, and you wana know what happend to my favorite one?
it got a chunk taking out of the side of it, poor thing could have died if i left it in the cage with the other syrian.
please seperate them, for your poor hamsters sake..they arent intelligent enough to seperate themselves, and if they were smart enough, they would each buy themselves a cage and live in it by themselves, so please, do the responsible mature thing and seperate them, i know its hard, but it will be worth it having 2 live hamsters vs 1 alive hamster...
please take these thoughts into serious consideration..
oh and boovilla, you rock.

One of my Syrian hamsters managed an amazing escape awhile back. I had an LM water bottle in the metal holder (with the angled spout) hanging over the side of a thirty gallon Sterilite bin. She somehow managed to climb up the waterbottle's side and get out!! Unbelieveable. it was a long climb. The top is now covered with mesh.
When she got out she dropped in on her sister - who got biten significantly around the legs, but also sadly eventually lost her right eye. :bawling:
She is managing now. But it is still sad.
NEVER let Syrians get together!!

You really should listen, and do the right thing; otherwise, you clearly do not care for your hamsters and should not be posting here, because we do care about these beautiful creatures. Do your homework on the subject, get advice, but don't be foolish and ignore experts on the subject. you have been warned and if one gets hurt (which will happen), it will be your fault. If I had your details, I would report you for animal cruelty.
