I have only had my hammys for about three months. I bought the first one while just 'looking' in the pet shop. I went to the library and found so much information, even in the children's section. What bothers me is the lack of knowledge some owners have. OK it is good to have somewhere to ask advice, but I think as responsible hamster owners we should read a book or visit a website at least. A lack of knowledge can really harm these little guys that we love so much.

Absolutely gotta agree about knowledge. Here's the thing. While many books and websites are accurate in their info there are some that show blatant mistakes concerning some or all aspects of Rodent care. Even Vets and other animal experts sometimes contradict each other in what's right and what's wrong. Always consider the source and don't believe all you read without exhaustive research on each topic you wanna learn about.

I am a adult but I did 2 months of online research before I got my Fancy ham I had her house all her supples and everything even before I started interveiwing hams at different stores before I decided on the bet place to get one. This was after I was at Petfinder.com and tried to rescue a ham in my area but all were at least a state or two away. I kinda find it upsetting so many people are breeding hams or Ooops! I put them together and they tried to kill each other today. I find the lack of respect for the breed sad sometimes. Like they are known for being loners, living alone and people want 6 hamsters to live together and all be friends and not to have kids maybe in a cartoon this would happen but not in real life. I realize so many people come home with a new ham and it turns up PG and you got to scramble to learn and all of a sudden how to care for a mom and her babies and then find them all homes. Makes me want to kick people at petstores who don't seperate the sexes as well. But on a positive note everyone here seems to want to help educate new owners and prevent unwanted births and are trying to teach good pet ownership thru exsample and that is wonderful to see.
