TODAY MY TWO DOGS WERE PLAYING WITH TOYS ON THE FLOOR. I CAUGHT MACKENIZIE (PITBULL) IN MAISE'S CRATE (CHIWOWOW) WHILE MAISE WAS PLAYING IN HER CRATE. I REACHED FROM THE TOP OF MACKENZIE WHILE I WAS ON THE COUCH. MACKENZIE SNAPPED AT ME WITH A SMALL GROWL. I AM THINKING THAT SHE DID NOT SEE ME AND WAS STARTLED BY THE INCIDENT. WELL I BOPPED HER ON THE HEAD AND NOW I FEEL BAD, BECAUSE THE REST OF THEY MORNING SHE WAS KIND OF SKITISH. THIS HOWEVER WAS NOT MY INTENTION OF HER TO BE AFRAID OF ME FOR THE REST OF THE MORNING WHEN I WENT TO PET HER ON THE HEAD. I JUST DONT WANT HER TO THINK THAT WHAT SHE DID WAS OK. NOW A FEW HOURS LATERS SHE SEEMED TIO BE REAL SUBMISSINVE AND WANTED TO CUDDLE AND LICK ME ON THE COUCH. IS THIS A WAY OF SAYING THAT SHE IS SORRY FOR HER MISTAKE. THAT IS HOW I INTERPETED THIS INCIDENT IN A NUTSHELL. I DONT THINK I WILL BOPP HER ON THE HEAD, BUT SAY "NO" AND MAYBE PUT HER IN HER CAGE FOR A FEW MINUTES.

I know this will come up soon or later, but it's spelt like this - Chihuahua (it's a toughie)

I also would like information on "why".
So far the only reason I can come up with is that when you do Kennel your dog any other time, it will think it has done something bad, even if it hadn't. And then maybe stop liking its kennel and not want to be in it.
I kennel my dog when she has misbehaved. I guess it depends on what she has done. Sometimes I make her come inside if she's done something bad outside, or I will take away her toy. She also responds if I tell her "Bad Dog" and point at her with my finger. I use the kennel as a "time out". Sometimes when she's done something bad she automatically goes there. She also sees her kennel as a safe place for her.

When she has done something bad she usually try’s to "suck up" after her time out is done. But I have also taught her I'm the "Alpha" member of our family so she can also act submissive towards me when she's misbehaved. But truly she is a great dog (She's 6 with lots of training) and we usually don't have any problems with her.

Thanks for your support. I use the cage for both dogs when they get a little too rambuxtious and/or to rough with each other. They both need to learn to settle down and relax. I usually never force the dogs into there cages, but lure them into the cage with a treat so theat they dont mind being in their cage. When a dog mishaves kike my above incident i dont believe caging them without a treat so they have time to think about what they did wrong. Now I have to agree that it depends on the incident whether to use such action as a punishment.

Oh by the way thanks for the correct spelling on the breed of dog that I will never learned how to spell.

take care

Crates are good for time outs, but don't let the dog think it's "punishment". Also, I'm not opposed to popping a large dog on the muzzle (Aussie gets smacked when he nips at me) but please don't hit a dog on the top of the head--I just found out that it can cause brain damage.

Pit Bulls shouldn't snap at people, even when they're startled. They were originally bred so that even in the middle of a fight, they would not lay a tooth on a human, but then there are idiots out there who don't breed for character.

I sue my dog's crates for 'time outs' when they are bad, and they still love their crates, even enough to go in for quiet time on their own when they feel like it. I read in a book a while ago (Second Hand Dog, think?) to compare sending your dog to its crate for puishment to sending a naughty child to their room- the kids don't grow to hate their rooms because it's punishement, neither do dogs. That's just what I learned and it's worked with my babies. In terms of bitnig, I think a dog that nips at it's owner for ANY reason, other than maybe startling or extreme pain, needs it's pack re-ordered. If your dog nips at you, it clearly feels it stands a chance of becoming 'alpha', as a subordinate dog would NEVER challenge the leader, unless it wanted to make a play for the top dog position. I think the exception to this would be a dog with abuse in it's past. But your dog snapping at you, for any reason except for extreme cases, is a dog that needs some behaviorhal evaluations, perhaps form a proffessional trainer. Good luck- I hoep it's the first and only time your dog tries to nip!

This nip was not an extreme np, but it was good enough for me to correct it immediately. I am the boss and I will always be the boss. This has not happened since, and it :bouncy: :bouncy: will not happen again. Keep in the mind that the dog was all excited and was playing with my other dog, and she thought maybe I was playing too! Also have to keep in my that she is a puppy, but I do know that this is the best time to correct the issue.
