hi-
all shall ask for a friend of mine.
She got a new tank.
11 inches tall, circumference of 22 inches at the base and 20 inches around the tank.
The tank looks like acylinder.
She would like to have some Guppys and some Ghost Shrimps in there.
The questions now is:
How many Guppys (she thought about 3 male, 5 female) she can but in there,
and also how many Shrimps (11)?
Also if she than still need a bottom feeder or a snail ('cause she got the Shrimps in there)?

Thank u already very mutch for your answer

Hi,

What your friend is planning is simply too much for that small of a tank. It sounds like the tank holds about 4 liters of water. Regardless of how much water it holds, however, looking at the size of it, it is definitely too small for all that fish life.

Those Ghost Shrimp that your friend is planning on having so many of? They will grow to be 1-1.5 inches long (females are bigger.) Then 8 guppies total, all of which are about maybe half an inch long (excluding fancy tails.) That's just too much fish and shrimp for that tank.

I would recommend getting a bigger tank if she wants that many. Otherwise, she can just have less fish and shrimp.

I would say no more than 1 Ghost Shrimp and 2 or 3 Guppies (male or female.)

Tell your friend to always keep in mind how big fish, shrimp, etc., grow to when deciding how many can fit in a tank. Some fish start our REAL small and end up growing HUGE (like Goldfish.) Size can be deceiving.

And no, she won't need any other bottom feeders. Though she may find an algae eater to be useful (or just keep the tank away from direct sunlight.) :)

If you want to help your friend, you could do some searching on the internet for websites with info on caring for Ghost Shrimp and Guppies. You can then print up copies of the info and give it to her, so she knows as much as possible about her fishy friends (even how to diagnose a sick fish.)

Hi Jade,

I don't mind you talking about me to your friend. I'm flattered, really. lol. ;P

I do know a lot about pets and animals, but there is ALWAYS more to learn. I am always borrowing books from the library, searching for new informational websites, talk to experts when I get the chance, etc. I think we (people) will always be busy learning more about our animal companions. I personally want to learn as much as possible. :)

Your friend has shown an interest in Guppies. I think Guppies are a good start. They are beautiful little fish that are fairly easy to care for and much fun to watch. It would be good to have a bottom feeder and/or algae eater of some kind. If she really likes Ghost Shrimp tell her to get one Ghost Shrimp. They're pretty easy to care for as well.

I have read that they will eat some algae and bits of fish food that the fish don't eat. They're good bottom feeders. I have also read there's a possibility the Ghost Shrimp will be eaten by fish. To give the Ghost Shrimp a better chance at staying alive, make sure to give him plenty of hiding places. Although, I am not sure that Guppies would pose much of a threat to the Ghost Shrimp. :)

Ghost Shrimp are supposed to be fairly peaceful, so I don't think they pose much of a threat to fish, either.

If your friend decides she'd like a Ghost Shrimp but no Guppies, tell her to only pick out smaller, peaceful fish that will pose no threat to the Ghost Shrimp.
