got new degu's about 4 months!! help

right now i have degu's. 2 of them i had them for like 5 motnhs and i got 2 more yesterday and there about 4 motnhs old. the ones i recenlty had there about 8 moths or alitle older.. i try to intrduce them together and let them sniff each other.. and that went ok then with seconds they started to fight, i know taht the 2 young ones i got are female and male, and the other old to i got one is a male and the other im not sure maybe a male... why would the big ones try to fight the little young ones.. is there a possible way i can get them to live together.. or should i try the dust bath with the vanilla,, can some one please help, i wanna try to get these 4 living together

If you put more than one male in a cage with a female or females the males will fight over the female or females. You can however put one male with more than one female or just put males together and females together.

Hi Degu 508,

There are two things you have to consider:
1. put only same sex degus together since otherwise your home will explode with unwanted degu offspring
The gestation period od degus is three months, your female can already be pregnant. Degus can have babies 4 times a year, up to 10 babies per litter
2. If you want to introduce older degus do as follows:
- clean existing cage carefully so there is no smell from the old group
- put divider in cage and put the old ones on one side and the new ones on the other. Exchange dust bath daily and exchange the sides where they sit too. Once they make friendly noises when they meet at the divider and like to sit together, you can try to take the divider out. The whole procedure can take a few weeks. It is worthwhile to be patient.

In your case I would suggest that you sex the degus and only try to put same sex degus together. Find homes for the other group. They need a spacious cage in order to thrive and get along well. The cage I have for my degus is 30x36x5ft. high with several levels and branches to climb. The cheapest way is to build one yourself. If you have more questions, feel free to ask.
