I got my flying squirrel on April 2003, at that time I didn't knew anything about flying squirrels :( I brought him home 'cause he seemed so sad and in such a bad condition (he is blind from the left eye, due to a fight with another squirrel in the petstore). And only when I arrived home I started searching on the internet about them. At that time there was not much info :(

I bought a not very big cage :( but quite expensive one :(

This is a pic of the cage in the first days:

Actually it is a bit different. What I want is a bit of help with some ideas so that I can make the cage a better place for my flying squirrel. Considering that I can't buy him a new one now.

Thanks :)

I hate petstores that don't take care of their animals. Were they treating him at all, or did they at least give you a reduced price seeing as he probably needs some form of medical attention?

my flyer is very active at night :) I'm placing new branches in his cage today :) you can see how his cage looks like today at http://xofinha.com.sapo.pt

he had been seen by a vet in the petstore 'cause of his blind eye and he had no health problems after I bought him. I bought him 'cause he was there all alone in a really small "cube" with nothing to play with. They said his cost was 150€ and they sold him for 75€ but recently I found out that they usually cost about 75€!! They deceived me but I'm really happy with my pet :)

I'm glad you're happy with your little fuzzy guy! I don't know if this would help (I don't have a flying squirrel, my cats would probably want to eat it, they're constantly trying to get in the room I have my mouse cage in), but I try to make little games and 'puzzles' for my pets. Like, I'll wrap treats in paper towel for my mice to pick apart, and I'll put a crinkled up ball of foil in a Kleenex box for my cats to try to get out, it gives them something different to do when I'm not around, something to keep them busy and not bored.

Be careful what branches you place in the cage as some are toxic to them. I have 2 lil guys I weaned them so they are extremely friendly. I had a FS from a pet store that was absolutly mean! He never changed. I have a hammock in thier cage also I'll send you a picture of my cage later, I make them by hand and it's very nice for them. I have also thier next box and a rope for climbing, I do have drift wood and some other branches. they have some bird toys and some toys that I've made them. they play pretty much with themselves, and what diet are you feeding? If you have any questions I'd be happy to talk with you! E-mail me at Sassy14486@aol.com
Have a great day!

Hey! How's the squirrel? I got some bird toys for Kadai--a rope one, a hanging ladder thingie, and other hanging toys big enough for him to grab onto, and a manzanita branch. They don't chew nearly as much as rats and gerbils, so the toys have not been chewed on. He's also got his nestbox to sleep in. He seems to like it.

Teco is fine :) His cage has been modified again but I don't have any pics yet.
Does anyone knows what temperature is considered extreme for them? Here in Portugal we are having a very hot summer!

*Grins* Glad he's good.

Uh...extreme temperetures...right...not sure they have one really. They're from the Southern United States, live here in the wild, and...well, lemme just say that 100 F is not unusual during the summer, especially in Texas. Although they do sleep during the day and it tends to cool down some at night. Maybe to 98, 97....*grin* I love Texas but I hate summer. Just keep him inside while it's hot and he should be fine.

Oh...I forgot that my fs it's not the same specie as yours. Mine is a Siberian Flying Squirrel (Pteromys Volans) and I think he is used to cold temperatures.

Oh. Well in that case, definitely keep him inside ^_^
Most animals are pretty adaptable though, so if he's in air conditioning or has a fan blowing around him he should be fine.
