Hey y'all, I've been wanting to set up a terrarium for some time now and my mom gave me the "ok" to get a frog or toad! I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions--here's the situation:
-10 gallon aquarium
-florescent/UV light source
-preferrably eats crickets/insects (NO MICE!)
-social/tolerates handling

Two frogs I was thinking about are the Pacman toad (ornate horned frog is, I think, its proper name), or the whites tree frog. Are these suitable? Any suggestions are DEFINITELY accepted, and any information regarding these two species or any other suggested frog species will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for any help you might have! :flower:

pacmans are cool my first frog was a cubby frog but somed other great beginner is the fire belly toad there awsome. but i dont thing you can handle and frog or toad because some are poisen and you could tear their skin butfor a beginner i would get a firebelly they live mainly in water and dont need any (as well as most frogs) type of lighting and dont get that big. i have two well i hope u find the right one for ya good luck.

I have a fire bellied toad, and they're not too tough to kill! They're a great beginner pet frog/toad. They don't like to be handled much, though. Mine likes my hand because it's warm, but I can't carry him around with me.

I just started keeping frogs about 3-4 months ago. I first started with a 10 gallon and got 2 firebellied toads. I decided to go with a 20 gallon terarium, but it became a 1/4 land 3/4 water. The water is 2 inches deep and i have a few logs in there. I purchased another frog about 2 months ago and i feed them 15 crickets 2x a week. They have been great and none have croaked yet :bouncy:

well don;t plan on getting a horned from if u don't plan on making him happy with mice...they love mice and actually many frogs can eat them exxcluding tree frogs of course....o and no african monsters then either yikes :angel6:

i would recommend a white tree frog , they don;t mind being handled..they won;t eat any mice..the tank is suitable for two of them and i suggest u get mates , unless ur not lookin for babies

I hung out at the pet store today (I tend to confuse the workers, because I never leave) and I got to hold a pacman frog! Those are very cute frogs, and looked fairly easy to take care of. I really like them. Does anyone know if they get along with fire bellied toads?

i work at a pet store and we cage out fire's with horns and they don't mind eachother but if they become aggressive u will want to switch tanks.... :bouncy2:

I think I am definitely going to get some variation of a tree frog, mostly because I don't want to stare at an inanimate blob like a pacman--lol--though they are very cute.

Can anyone tell me how much time, on average, they spend on maintaining the cage for their frog? Also, what is a good set up for a tree-frog terrarium? Thanks!

welll if say so u want a in antimate object although they do some interesting stuff ...but at my petshop i work at i take car4e of some tree frogs .
-u will have to spray the cage once a day because they require moister to make the mucus to be those sticky buggers they are and to live of course they also take in moisture through there skin.
- will have to change the cage as needed
- u will ahve to replace the water daily with non chloriinated or distilled water
- and they will eat about every 2 days mine take 4 full grown crickets every to days but u can m,ake up ur own schedule but makes sur eits set and u are feeding them enough
-u will have to keep the temperature at 80-86 in the day and 72-76 at night
-they will also need the proper UVB rays

I have a pacman and they are not very tolerable to handling. Plus, I'm not sure about anyone else, but I fed my pacman live mice. He loves them and only needs one every 2 weeks or so. If I were you I would go for either a white tree frog or a firebelly frog. They are fun frogs to watch.

Are there any frogs or toads that like to be handled a lot?
