i love my dwarves. i have a father and son that live together- birch and cougot. they get along pretty much perfectly. i go to class and take birch with me in my pocket. and he takes a nap. or i put him on my shoulder and walk down broadway. he goes in all the stores with me. hehe. he really likes urban outfitters and canal st. jeans. cougot's too jumpy.

lil bunnie, it is sad that you have had such a bad experience with your pets. Still not all hamsters are alike. I have taken in pets for a long long time, and have found that sometimes hamsters that eat their babies may be lacking in some aspect of their diet. If you saw that they had bitten off each other's ears that would have been a good sign to seperate them. I have dwarf hamsters and they are the sweetest things. They have three little babies and even daddy loves snuggling with the little ones. I hope that this terrible experience has not soared you to all hamsters. Please email me at angelfire1966@msn.com I have so many suggestions for you.

Don't diss on the breed just becuase you had a bad experience with them. I have mice and they also will eat eachothers babies so you have to be very careful. When your Hamsters first started biting eachother and fighting you should have separated them. I would suggest that you should go buy one Darwf Hamster and bond with it. I'm sure you will have a much different perspective on them after that.

I am sorry to know about your sad and bad experiences.
I am not sure, but you are a little unclear on what caused it to happen.
Did you introduced the hamster properly to each other?
Also, when your hamsters have babies, did you separate the non-parents away from them? It is not advisable to have all hamsters, big and small together, when a mohter hamster gives births. This will cause the other hamsters to think that the babies are not their 'family', and this might cause them to cannibal the babies.
I am also not too sure what breed of drawfs you have. Some drawfs are a little nibby and easily irritated. Such hamsters need to be handle often to tame them.
I do have my hamsters eating their babies too. Here are some likely reasons why will eat them :
- the mother feel threathened by surrounds
- mother under-nutrition
- babies are unhealthy and not likely to survive
- human touches babies
- babies have foreign smell
- when the babies are born dead
Hamsters owners/lovers... please add more comments, if i have left any points out.
lil_bunnie, hope you will be able to overcome the fear of keeping them.
