Hi- I am new here, so I'm not sure if this is the right thread to post this on. Direct me if it should be somewhere else!
I have a rat who is 2+ years old, about the normal life-expectancy of rats. He seems to be ill, but I read on another thread that rats don't catch colds. He isn't sneezing, and I haven't noticed a runny nose, but he is struggling to breathe. He is wheezing big time, and he has to open his whole mouth and stretch out his body to take a breath. It is loud, and very noticeable) He isn't eating, much, and I assume it's because he can't breathe. It sounds like asthma or pneumonia, or something.
Now, I believe in taking animals to the vet, and all, but I know he's getting "up there" and I'm afraid that if the vet were to tell me he needs "this and that" medicine which will prolong his life for one more month, I just might fork out all of the money. I know he's dying. I am not sure if he is suffering or in pain, or what I could do to put him out of his misery.
Has anyone experienced this, or can you tell me what I should do?
