14 days ago I purchased 2 dwarf hamsters from Petsmart - being told they were social from the same litter and would be fine - they fought constantly with one being the agressor all the time - 4 days ago we returned the agressive one after a bloody biting, fight - and brought home a new friend - all was going well - however today we found the original hamster with gooey poop on him -we were treating for wet tail - and upon further examination found what appeared to be a large clump of yellowish poop - we were gently cleaning it from him and the more we cleaned the more it looked like a large cavity from which more of the yellowish poop kept emerging - while cleaning him he suddenly died. Does anyone know what this may have been? We still have the new hamster and are hoping there was no disease he may catch. Any help is appreciated. It looked possibly like a rupture or hernia from the intestines - his tummy was quite swollen in that area. We are sad>

I'm so sorry! Also, dwarf hamsters cant get wet-tail. Only Syrians and robo's can. And maybe Europians. You should have seperated them right away when you saw them fighting!!

Sounds like it 'could' have been an abcess that had closed over, infrected, grew, then reuptured inside and poisened the hamsters body. You probaly were cleaning the puss coming from the area where there was the original puncture, this would all explain the large cavity (the abcess itself).
The abcess would have happend probably during a fight with the other hamster, and if you coudln't see the puncture at first, and it's not properly cleaned, the puncture woudl close itself over, and become an abcess.
Poor Little Hammy.
I suggest cleaning the houseing and everything VERY WELL before putting another animal in it (as should be done anyways) just in case it's something else.
Sorry for your loss.

As to the abandoning of a life long friend - we had had the hamster 5 days - and it was attatcking the other one daily - we were trying to save one of them. And I didn't have another cage - at any rate we talked a friend who had seen him and loved him into going and getting him - so he truly has a lifelong friend now.
After talking to the vet about the other I believe those who replied an abcess were correct. It probably did happen from the bite wound. It was hard to lose him he did not have a long life. We miss him!
