You can get either the standard (syrian) hamster, or the tiny (dwarf) hamster. You'll need a cage, preferably a spacious one. Habitrail makes some awesome types, such as the safari, and space station. Habitrail cages are durable, expandable, and easy to clean, so I reccomend one of those. Your other option is to go with a two-storey wire cage. PLEASE don't get a tiny cage, as your hamster will be cramped and uncomfortable! After that, get a plastic food dish that is slightly heavy, so that it wont tip over. Get a generic vacuum-sealed water bottle. A wheel is necessary, either enclosed or not. (If you're getting one of the habitrail sets above, it may be included. Just read the box). You need some sort of a safe, snug house..there are dozens of types..it's up to you. Use wood shavings on the bottom of the cage, but nothing scented, and NOT CEDAR! Get a large bag of quality food..the better the food, the happier your pet will be. Look for a variety of ingredients. To conclude, there are a variety of other optional things. Hamster bedding is supposedly bad for your hamster if it ingests it, but many owners still use it, and I havent had a problem yet. Hamster balls are great, they're little balls to stick your hamster in. Get one according to the size of your hamster (dwarf/regular). Many owners feed treats, chew sticks, and vegetables to their pets. I do recommend this on an occasional basis, but not extremely frequently. Some hamsters can be litter trained, (Myne all were), so you may want to provide a tiny litter box with a SMALL amount of UNSCENTED litter. Lastly, hamster toys are a big hit, and make the cage more fun. These can be hanging blocks, tubes, tunnels, cubes, etc. Good Luck!
