My 9 yr old, found a baby mouse 3 days ago, we have been trying to feed it milk, he doesnt seem to get a belly full. I dont want him to touch it, so I use a paper towel. it is less than 3/4 of an inch, eyes are closed yet. Help us save this liitle critter. where can I get the right size dropper and milk for it. He keeps turing and crawling around when I try to feed it. How do I get him to take it and do they suck on the dropper or what, Im new to this type of pet.
thx

Hi tryplesss,

I think the mouse must be seriously ill, if it isn't taking any fluid itself.

You may wish to try putting the dropper/syringe at its mouth and slowly feed it.

I think bringing it to the vet or shelters for assistance would be more benefitial, just in case the mouse doesn't make it in time to eat. Keep us posted on its condition.

tryplesss, i do not keep mouse, but i have got hamsters. My hamsters open their eyes when they are about 2 weeks old. I hope this is more or less the same with mouse, and give you a rough idea. I am so happy that your mouse is beginning to eat. Thank god your kid found the little mouse, else it wouldn't have survive at all. Good luck.

Please let me know how your mouse is doing. My 11 year old also found a baby mouse and has been licking whole milk from our hands and has now lasted 3 days. Has hair, but no eyes open. Seems to walk for a tiny bit then fall over on its back and "spazzing" a little bit. Hope its not ill. Seems to be getting better, though as far as walking. What are you feeding it? Please pass on any hints to help. Thanks!

Well after all our efforts to help this little life, it failed, At 4 am on saturday morning he was fine, by 10 am, he was dead. He was sucking and drinking and moving more, like he was getting stronger and I thought for sure he was gonna make it. I printed out a paper from online somewhere that said 75%
didnt survive. I dont know how old it was, he had hair all over him, and his eyes were still closed after 5 days. I bought baby critter milk from Walmart, and a critter nursing bottle, he loved it. Just dont know what happend. He was kept warm, had tissues and a little blanket. It was sad. I think I was more sad than my son. Thannks for all the help and concerns. Hope you all have better luck than I did. bye for now.

I am sorry for your lost. I hope that this incident won't deter you from keeping another one. I think there are lots of pets that really need help and care from us. Take care.

To Tryplesss: Well, we lost our little mouse. It is strange how they seem fine and then all of a sudden die. Especially when it seemed he was also taking more milk and moving about more. He never opened his eyes. It was sad. Animals do teach us so much and with our young children teaches them about caring and responsibility and sadly...about death. We tried....

You need to take a warm damp cottonball after feeding the baby and gently rub her belly. The reason they usually die is because they get a waste build up since they cannot pass waste on their own when they are that young.

The baby might of been abandoned by its mother becuase it was sick or had something wrong with it. That could be the reason it died. But usually mice dont die all of a sudden so I have no clue. Also I have myself a little field mouse. Im still trying to decide if Im gonna keep it or not. I think its a baby mouse. :stork-boy An older baby mouse. It is much smaller than my adult fancy mice, but eating solid food with its Huge eyes open. I named her Twiggy. The reason I named her that is cuz..well... my cat actually brought her to me. He walked up to me with a Twig in his mouth!(1st time i seen a cat carrying a stick). He dropped the twig and there was a little mouse! Alive and not injured! Although, she does have a tumor. She hasnt been acting sick from it. Hopefully, its not a cancerous one. Ive read about people giving rats certain herbs to help tumors and even save their lives. Im thinking I can do the same for my mouse. Can anyone help me with this? :nurse:

tryplesss and Titan: I'm sorry for your loss and I know how you feel. Orphaned baby mice can be doing very well and then just pass. It's not your fault and you both did the best you could.

When I found a nest of eight babies at 6 days old, five of them died days short of opening their eyes. As you've probably read, the odds of them soar once their eyes open. It was very sad for my family and me.

But three DID survive, two girls and a boy. At three months old, they're doing very well and it was completely worth trying to save them. I love my two sweet girls.

If you want to read more about them, visit the link at the bottom of my post.
