I bought my daughter a pair of Degus for her birthday. I am usually the one that buys the rats over the gerbils. One look at the Degus boxing and I fell hard. We put them in Chinchilla balls and let them run around the house. The are so curious and always seem to find me. They will also come to us if my daughter or I call them. The sounds that they make are almost bird-like, but without the shrieking edge to them. We plan on having one litter, keeping all the babies but separating the girls from the boys.
Since I am pretty new to Degu's, I have checked out websites though, I was wondering if there was a sure way to know that they have successfully bred. I assume that they are like rats and mice and you can just count on it that they did??
Thanks :D

The males will make loud repetitive squeaks @ 1-3 seconds apart after mating successfully. You will definently know unless you arent home or are a very sound sleeper. There is a very good website you should check out.... www.degus.org

I just popped in to read up on the degus, I would love to have a couple but until my house is in order and my office is perfect I don't have the space. However.. I would like to say thank you over the rats and mice thing.. I have been trying to breed my rat forever it seems and NOTHING lol. It better happens soon or it won't happen at all :(

I have just got 3 female Deygos and would have never thought about putting them in Chinchilla balls as I have kept a number of Gerbils. When Gerbils were in the balls, and the ball hit a wall, the ball came undone, so you spent the time trying to catch them instead of them staying in the balls.

My friend also keeps and breeds Chinchillas, and she said that Chinchillas should not but placed in such toys.
