I like both actually, but if I had to pick one I'd have to say Syrian. We have 5 adult and 19 baby Syrians. The only thing I don't like about them is that I have to keep them in separate cages.
My daughter prefers dwarf hamsters because they are tiny and you can have more than one in a cage. Unfortunately they don't sell dwarfs in the pet store near us. We had one dwarf about a year ago named Nemo but he died. :(

Aww I love the name Nemo! Sorry you lost him. :(

I prefer syrians, since that's the only breed I've had. I'd like to try a dwarf, they seem so sweet and kind, but that may be in a few years. :)

Is it what you prefer? or what you've owned?
I had a syrian hamster as a kid, He was a great pet. I hear dwarfs can be biters, but i duno I don't own hamsters anymore.

like snoopydog, ive only had syrians and dont get me wrong dwarves are cute, but ive heard theyre hyper, but i could be wrong, since hamsters should be judged by personality rather than breed. but from my personal experience ill go with syrian.

The dwarfs I had as a kid were ok.. but never tame.

I'm working on taming a dwarf cutie right now... but she's bit both me and my boyfriend. Siigh.

Oh well, She hasn't bit me once outside of her cage, and so far I haven't had a hard time getting her to come out on her own... So we will see...

But yes Eclara, my dwarf is SUPER FAST too! :)

I've owned both too! A little dwarf called Chewy a few years ago who was soo tame and sweet, never bit me once! And a few syrians ranging from raging viscious biters, to gently wouldnt-hurt-a-fly cuties. So i reckon it depends on the personality of the hamster, not its species. :) Syrians are easier to handle though i'll agree.

I like both of them, my brother had a dwarf and he was the best hamster we had ever had but he spent most of his life sleeping. I have a syrian right now and he is a lot more active and he is really cute.

I had two Syrians and two Dwarfs. The Syrians were sooo much nicer and much more tame, and had never bit me. The Dwarfs, however, were very hard to tame and bit me. One of my Dwarfs, Shelly, was so agressive she litterally attacked any living thing that crossed her path. She was tame as a baby, but soon became very mean. So I'd say Syrian. Dwarfs are cute, but aren't that nice.

Definitly Syrian, Ive had a Syrian and a Dwarf. My syrian never bit me, but my dwarf, HOLY CRAP! you cant even touch it or pick it up without it biting you, i have to like stick something for my dwarf to crawl in so i can take it out. so syrians ARE BETTER THEN DWARFS! :D

I like syrians but you have to get them when they are young or otherwise they can be a bit jumpy no matter how much you handle them. I do prefer dwarfs over syrians though. I have 2 syrians, 3 robos(the little livewires), 2 winter whites, but campbells are my favorite! I have probably over 60 campbells. all are spoiled and all but a couple are super sweet and would never even think about hurting anyone or anything, except maybe their water bottles which they love to chew holes in. still cant figure out why, but anyways, you get the point

i have had syrians... in fact i still have one..She is a biter... she was sweet at first then she got gosh awful wierd...i like her though still an ill just have to start over daily with her... but i also have dwarfs... I love how i dont hear them fight if they are near eachother.. Its cool. It stinks that my syrian fought all the time with the dwarfs... Only got along with them to mate then fought him an the others. well i hope that helps... To me Dwarfs are more tamable.. an they are very loving an seem to "know" their owners. :)

I'm biased. The syrian hamster I had as a kid bit and bit and bit and never really got anywhere near tame. She was an adult when we got her, so she may have had bad human experiances before my family, but I don't know. Her name was Harry, so maybe she was holding a grudge for that. I've never known another hamster of any sort to be completely foul tempered but her. She was my pet though, so I loved that hamster when she was alive. Then for years after she passed away, I was as nervous around hamsters as most people are around spiders.

Now I have a dwarf hamster who was a second hand fellow that'd been returned to the petshop because, as we were warned, he was supposedly a nasty little biter. The pet store girl actually put on thick, elbow-length leather gloves (it looked like she could have picked up an angry badger), before reaching in his cage to get him out. You would have thought he'd killed the last three employees by the way they acted. It brought back memories, or maybe scary scary flashbacks... in any event, I thought that was alittle too much, and I left the store without him. An hour or two later though, I was back. Maybe because he reminded me of Harry, I'd thought about it and figured that if he was really as bad as all that, he might as well go to a home that had experience with such things. (Love my justification.) So I took him home and got him settled in for the evening, but before the night was out I couldn't help it - I reached in there nice and slow to see how he'd react. He approached me, sniffed me, and gave me a little pinch. No pain, no blood, just a pinch. He was not what I remembered a biter to be. Within days, he even stopped giving pinches. His name is Scurvy now, and he's just about the friendliest, most docile furball that anyone could care to meet. Go figure.

Dwarf Hamster!
