Go to your local animal shelter and see if they have one or one that you like. If all else ask them for reliable breeders.

Newspapers are not a source to turn to when considering pruchasing a dog.

Certainly search your local shelters and petfinder.com to adopt.

If you want insist on purchasing a purebred golden, do your research for reputable breeders. Make sure you have the opportunity to meet the pups parents to be able to judge the disposition and temperment. Also, reputable breeders will show proof of medical for genetic disorders for the parents as well as records of testing the puppies.

Reputable breeders will also offer a guarantee of the puppy as well as take the puppy back should you at any point become unable to keep the puppy.

Definitely do your research on the breed.

I wouldn't buy a golden retriever. They're great with kids and listen to you half the time, but I suggest you don't get one. They shed alot, and I mean ALOT.They will shed over two cups a day.You have to brush them daily or they mats. They're annoying, and they need attention constantly. My grandparents have two.And I tell you, nearly every golden retriever is the same.Hairy, annoying, and highstrung.I'd say golden retrievers are for the more experienced person. In other words, they're like having a child.

Not all dogs are the same.

Well, yeh to each his own. Goldens are wonderful dogs. Your grandparents probably didn't get them from a reputable breeder. Yes they shed, but there are a lot of dogs that shed. Siberian huskies shed far worse than any other dog I know. Having a double coat and blowing it twice a year is almost unbarable sometimes. It all depends on how their raised. Sibes are the most stubborn dogs I have ever seen, but it makes them totally different from other dogs. I've never heard of goldens being 'highstrung' and 'stubborn'. My retriever/chow mix was a wonderful dog. Shedded alot but I didn't care.

Go to your local shelter first, or petfinder.com and you can find one in your area. If you go to a breeder, be sure to ask about health tests that they've made on their parents and pups, to be sure your getting the pup that won't show up with health issues when it gets older.

Also, if you don't want a big shedder, with 'clumps' of hair all around, maybe try a lab. Labs are great dogs also. But if you change your mind, don't forget to research the dog. And if you haven't already, research the golden's as well. Sometimes there can be health issues in certain breeds that you need to know about and look out for, and then again, when you get the pup, thats why you ask for health tests.

I live with a golden, and she's a sweet dog, though barks non stop and has no manners around people. NON of this is her fault, the roommate that owns her isn't a "good" owner, he dosn't practice obidiance with her, nor give her enough attention, or socilize her. I try as much as I can, but I have my own dog I have to work with.

So I want to say, ALL Dogs are different, no matter the breed. The "Breeds" can have different characteristics, but that dosn't mean they cannot be good dogs, with love, training and socilization any dog can be a good dog.
No bad dogs... just bad owners.

Well,I didn't exactly mean they're bad dogs. But they do demand lots of attention and not many people are willing to give them that, and unfortunately have get rid of them.If you had experience with dogs before, you can get one. They can be a bit klutzy sometimes.Who knows, you might get a really good goldie, but I would get a Golden Retriever mix if I were going to get a golden. That way you'd have the look of a golden retriever and the expenses of taking it to the vet when it has arthritis(signs can be as early as 5)wouldn't be much.I guess that's the way with all big dogs though, but mixes will may longer and be healthier than most purebreds. For you,if you really want to get one,I'd go to a golden retriever rescue. You might discover your pound dog will be better than a one bought from a breeder,as I found with my dog.Good luck.

Well, that's why you should teach the dogs DOGGY MANNERS. They should never demand attention from you. If they demand attention, such as comming to you, and nudging their nose under your hand, or jumping all over you, and you GIVE them the attention, then that isn't always a good thing. They become dominant if you do this for too long. Because the dominant dog in a pack demands for attention, demands when it is time to play, when it is time to eat, etc. Then when it leads to dominance struggles, is when the dogs can become aggressive. That's why doggy manners and obedience school is good because then you don't have a dog DEMANDING for your attention when they want it.

Golden Retrievers are one of the nicest dogs I know! They dont DEMAND attention, but they certianly would love to have it! I dont think they shed much, compared to my German Shephard that sheds everyday. Even when you tell it to come, it sheds when it walks and when it shakes, large tufts af hair fall out. Raising each breed of dog is like raising a child because you have to take care of it.

I would suggest to look at www.petfinder.org because they have lovely pets that need a home.

all dogs need lots of attention and all dogs have lots of expenses. and all dogs need proper training and if they don't get it it's the owners fault, not the dogs.

mishalee where are you getting this information from? guess what, not only goldens have health problems. all dogs have health problems. sorry to have to say that. if you're going to post information here, make sure it's accurate okay?

when getting any dog, you have to make sure you are ready. and since a golden retriever is what you want, then you should do research on the breed first.

There are many breed specific rescues and petfinder.com is a great place to start, as some previous people said.

I would first check the rescues and shelters.

If your set on a breeder be prepared to investagate and research breeders for a minimum of 6 months then be put on a waiting list if you approve (and if they approve you)
