I am having a problem with my budgie michael. Maybe this happens to all birds when they go on their first flight but he keeps smashing into walls when he flies. Does anyone have any advice? Im afraid if i let him have another free flight he will fly so fast and knock into a wall he'll die. PLEASE Help :( :( :worried: :worried: :scared:

Does he bump into walls or windows? I haven't heard of a lot bumping into walls but many will bump into the glass on windows wanting to get outside. Next is their a perch or play gym outside of his cage that he can land on so he will have a place he feels comfortable. Make sure you don't try to reach for him or anything when first starting as in fear he may fly into anything. Has his wings ever been clipped? If one of his wings has been clipped and the other hasn't or if one side has grown in faster than the other it can affect their flight balance and make them clumsy.
Lastly has he been checked over by a vet? When a budgie is sick one of the first things to go is their balance and this can also affect their flying. One sign if it is sickness is does he sit on one foot or both when sleeping. If he perches on both while sleeping he may have a balance problem because of sickness if he perches on one his balance is more than likely okay.

Thanx. I bought him from a breeder three days ago. Im just worried that when he bumps into walls and window he will die because he is so scared.

Just make sure you don't make any loud noises or quick movements. I don't want to worry you but stress can actually kill your budgie. I will never forget the first time I went to buy a budgie when I was a little girl. I picked our a pretty blue one and the pet store went to get him out of the cage. He was so scared he got around her arm and flew out. He proceeded to bump into the wall and then down onto the floor. She managed to catch him and he seemed to be okay except for heavy breathing. He died the next day. The store took him and had tests run to see if something else had killed him or if he had hit himself too hard etc, because they didn't want a sickness to infect the others if that was the problem. (I know surprising in most pet stores). Anyway according to the vet he did not have a great amount of "trauma" to the head or body to show that it was impact that killed him but he did have a build up of chemicals that relates to stress so they said it was the stress that killed him.

Again not wanting to worry you but it is a possibility if you are not real careful and let your little birdie get comfortable on his own. Also if he is showing too much signs of stress you might give him a couple days to calm down before trying again. Don't give up on trying just give him a bit of a break.

I totally agree, there no way he feels safe if you only had him for few days, wait at least a 5-7 days to get him accostomed to the cage and new surroundings, then once he feels safe, open the cage door but dont touch him, when hes comfortable he will come out of the cage to play, dont rush anything, its will only traumatize him further.
