:hamster1: :hamster2: i just have one question.i have heard so many reasons that you cant keep 2 syrians in 1 cage.before i knew this i got a hamster and so did my brother.we've had them in one cage ever since then and they have never had one fight.in fact they always stay together,i just want to know whats the big deal with 2 syrians in1 cage.

Because syrians are SOLITARY creatures, that's why it's a big deal. And not to seem harsh, but I really am sick of people saying "my 2 syrians are fine together, you don't know what you're talking about". It is pure fact that they do not want (or need) company.
What if they start fighting? Are you ready for one to die because you thought it was OK to keep them together? The only thing I can tell you is to separate them! I can't stress it enough.
Sorry if I sound harsh, I just can't seem to find a way to get this through to people.

Are your hamsters still young? If so that may be why they are okay together now. Syrian hamsters cannot be kept together after they mature. I separate my hamster babies by the age of 6 weeks. They may get along fine now but that could change quickly and you may not be around to stop it.
Believe me, I know it is a pain to buy extra cages, I have 5 adult syrian hamsters. I also have 19 babies, some with prospective homes already and some without. The ones that don't have homes have will have to have separate cages soon. But this is an expense that I will have because I made a commitment to these hamsters. They deserve the best quality of life possible.

could it be possible that the syrians were younger when they met and soon trusted eachother?

Keeping adult Syrians together is animal abuse.
I have a lot here, very tame and docile, and on the rare occasions when one escaped and got in another's bin they usually ended up hurting each other. Theodora almost lost her right eye once after a bite and a bad infection. It was terrible to see. Others suffered huge gashes in their backs.
A few times, nothing happened in the several hours they were together. BUT IT EVENTUALLY WOULD. Any rivalry over space or food would result in vicious fighting.
There are no more escapes as I finally have learned their clever tricks.
Separate those Syrians. How many times do we have to go over this?? If you can't afford a new Habitrail get a 30 or even a 20 gallon bin; most of mine happily live in bins with their own wheel and hide box, and toys.

Oh, come on. I once had a mom, Rainy (see my signature), with her litter, and they babies were removed over the course of several days. The final remaining youngster, maybe a month old, was eventually chased and nearly attacked - and Rainy was the sweetest hamster there could be. They are NOT meant to live together as in their natural environment there is not enough food and water to sustain groups; being solitary is what they are meant to be do.
Keeping two together is a form of high risk gambling.

Zouave is very right and separating your hamster is strongly adviced. Just because they haven't fought, it will only take a few seconds for them to change their minds.
Are you sure they are syrians? Could it be possible that they are dwarf hamster? I only say this because it is very unlikely for such a situation to happen.

:hamster1::hamster2:I'm positive that they are syrians.do you think that they cuold be part dwarf or something? no matter though i've already ordered another cage and it should be here this weekend and i'm going to seperate them because i'd rather them be apart then be in pain or worse.thanks for all the advice(no matter how harsh) because i want my hammies to have the best life possible and thats why i posted this forum.:hamster1::hamster2: :)

Okay, I doubt the can be part dwarf (picturing a syrian's body with dwarf legs :) )
Honestly, you rule. Just for recognizing the potential danger involved, you immediately took action and I commend you for that.
I'm stuck in the same situation with my leopard geckos. They're both males and I'm separating them now :hamster1:
I'm so happy for you and you dont realize how much you made my day with your sweet little post -propeller

Thank you so much for separating them! Most people get stubborn saying they can make it work, but you immediately found a way to fix the problem. That's great! :)

The one's at the pet stores are young, so they aren't territorial. As they get older, they get more territorial and will then fight. The one's at the pet stores are usually sold before they are that mature.

Hi ive got a problem too. so this is it :
i have three hamsters altogether ( thats 1 mother and 2 babies) and i only have 2 cages so i put the 2 babies in 1 cage and the mother in the other cage. they were getting along fine till yesterday when the 2 babies had a fight and made each other BLEED! so i had to seperate 1 of the babies and put it in with the mother so now there not fighting but they might do soon so i am going to wait till 1 of the babies has recovered and give it to 1 of my mates who wanted a hamster and then i will be left with 2 cages for 2 hamsters. Do you think this is a good idea. Please reply cause i need advice.

all depends, how old are your babies.if they are over 5 weeks old then seperate all of them. They are solitary animals. If you have to buy a 15 gallon rubbermaid container for the time being .

To add to that pet stores from what I've seen, read and heard have little if any knowledge with the animals they sell. That's why you always hear horror stories on how "I bought my pet from a pet shop and how he wasn't properly potty trained, blah-blah-blah". A breeder would have much more knowledge, love, care, etc.
Pet stores are just in it to sell and that's it....they could care less about the quality of the animal.
