I have a hamster that bites the hell out of it's cage and I was wondering if it's bad for the hamster to continue biting it?
Or can I find a way to make it stop from biting it?
I tried giving it a wood chew and a saltlick but she doest care for either of them.
My space station is getting trashed so any help is appreciated... :) :hamster1:

Most hamsters chew on the cage. All I can say is let him do it, no harm in that. I actually noticed that they usually don't use the wooden chewsticks, and prefer the cage over just about everything. It is annoying, yes, but I see it as part of owning a hamster. :)

Yeah but how long would it take for a dwarf hamster to mark his scent before its ready for the female to come? (don't worry he is young not adult yet)

If you don't mind me asking, what are you talking about? I hope you don't plan on breeding.

I don't think i woudl use any of those products on a small rodent... it could be harmfull sicne they are ment for cats and dogs which are alot larger then hamsters.
Buy him a wooden house to chew on, or switch to a tank. Tanks are great b/c they don't have bars to chew, and so no sore red noses or late nights ;) (unless you have a squeeky wheel lol)
My hamster lived in a tank with a habitrail top that had tubes going up, it was great. :hamster1:

This same question seems to come up almost daily. There are many old threads on it that can be found.
Summary: move the cage to where they can't see or hear you. Cover the cage with something light that blocks vision but does not cut off circulation (don't let them gnaw it!); coat the bars with some bad testing liquid you can get at pet stores (Bitter Apple; Best Behavior; or even alum); if all else fails (as it has for me on many occasions) GET A THIRTY GALLON STERILITE BIN, and rescue a dwarf hamster and put him in the Space Station. I did that, and he is happy there.
