Hi. I breed my hamster and had 11 babies.
I've managed to rehome all apart from 4. I cant seem to find homes for them. Ive advertised in many shops and newspapers. I've also asked a few pet shops around where i live if they would take them on but they wont.

I dont know what to do. They are 7 weeks old, cute and very tame. I just dont understand why i cant rehome them.
Please can you help me?

do u know any friends that might want to own some? or parents with little kids? if i lived where u were i would have atleast taken 4

I've already sold a few to friends. I put ads the the shop in my village and the next two local ones.
Pets shops near me wont take them cos they have their own breeder.

Why did you breed without having homes for all of them pre-arranged??

Dropping them off at crowded pet stores is cruel, inhumane, and totally unacceptable.

Now your responsibility is to care for all of them for as long as it takes. YOU bred; now you CARE.

I once bought a female hamster (Rainy; see my signature) who had a surprise litter of 12. That was 18 months ago. I cared for all of them, and the surviving seven childen are still here. I am glad I kept them; I love them all

What you do is care for all of them. You decided to breed them for some reason. Now their sweet lives are your responsibility. (Four is not many).

It would have helped if you deigned to tell us where you live. In NYC there is a fine animal rescue shelter: www.nyanimalrescue.org. Maybe they know of some in your area, wherever that is.

I think the only way im gunna sell the four left is to reduce the price. They may go. If not then i dont have a clue. They will be 7 wks old next week and i just hope to find homes soon.
they are okay for now, but need to go soon.

Zouave wasn't being "rude", he was probably just concerned. Breeding is a HUGE thing, and if you have to come across as rude to explain something, then that's what you do. I completely agree with Zouave, and I think more people like him should be on PetsHub. He cares about the animals, and that's what this place is all about.

Keep looking for homes for the babies, but until then keep taking great care of them.

i think u should only come off as rude to someone if they dont listen to u wen you first say it nicely. he should have said it nicely to that person. all opinions here should be expressed politely. thats wat i think..but maybe some people just like saying things rudely. i'm just glad i'm not like that.

I think it's more that when we get a lot of posts on a certain subject, we tend to get more "harsh" because we see it so often, and sometimes it's hard to get your point across without adding a *little* meanness to it. I mostly get a little rude when someone asks a question that there have already been tons of posts on. Especially on breeding. I don't see why so many people are breeding, but I don't rule their life. I think Zouave's main point was that the person asked "what should I do", and the answer was obviously to take care of the babies until you can find a home. But, what's done is done. I'm not going to argue, because it really gets us nowhere. :)

i know that there is two sides to this. And i know that everyone has a opinion.

I didnt expect my hamster to have 11 babies. I was only excepting her to have a few because it was her first litter and i read lots of things say that they dont have that many.
I found homes for all the other apart from these ones. I have reduced the price and in ads i have said what colours they are to try and get more noticed.

Er,I don't think Zouave was being rude,just stating the truth.You would have all your babies in homes by now if you arranged their homes,it would be very responsible.Breeders have to put their unsold babies in a shelter,which is just sad and mean.

Why would they put them in shelters am studying to be a breeder for certain types of dwarf hamsters and if I were you I would just give the ones that I didn't sell to certain people like realitives or maybe being in a certain area or too

What I mean (sorry if the other post didn't make sense) is try to ask people that have kids that want to have a pet and why not just sell the hamsters to those people my suggestion is is that you give one of the hamsters to someone whos child wants a pet why not make a dwarf hamster there first pet I mean I know dwarfs are popular pets in England and all why not just ask people at your school or your temple if they no someone that has a kid that wants a dwarf for a pet that might work for certain moments in a childs life.

My hampster, Blackberry had 9 babies 2 1/2 weeks ago I was going to keep two, Bright eyes and Fiver but Fiver died today :'(

Not to add to this arguement... but I don't see how you can find homes for all the babies prior to breeding since you have no idea how many will be in each litter.

Is there an average litter size?

It seems that unless you find 15 or more homes, with the intent of disappointing a number of people (in the event of a smaller litter) that it is impossible to have homes lined up for all of the pups.

I suppose that I was just pleased to see that she / he had pre-arranged homes for many of them.

Hey People! I've managed to get homes for the 4. One is going to a friend of my sis. And the other 3 are going to a pet shop. Rang around this morning and managed to find somewhere to take them on.

I'll remember next time to find more people for homes.
