Hi! Last Saturday, some pathetic excuse for a human dumped 2 Holland lops in
our parking lot and left. I am now their mom, and loving it! Problem is,
they are not spayed and neutered, and I have a male and a female, who are
frequently trying to mate during their "out times". This unanticipated event
has left me with very little savings, as I was broke to begin with until
next payday, and the hay, pellets, litter, hutch and other supplies cost me
almost $400. I need to find a low cost spay and neuter clinic in the
Evanston, Skokie, Niles, Morton Grove, Wilmette or North side of Chicago,
Illinois areas. Does anyone know of any off hand? So far, the lowest price
I've found is $276 combined for the two of them to get checkups and Lily
spayed, and Dash neutered. If I pay this, I won't have money for groceries,
bills, or to feed my 2 cats on top of it. PLEASE HELP! I can find tons of
feline and canine low cost neutering clinics, but rabbits are much harder.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! You can post here, or email me
directly at tracyq@lydialunch.org. Thank you!

Hello TracyQ,

I understand your situation.
Times are hard, when cash is tight.

Since you are quite tight with your cash, instead of sterilising both, you can sterilise one of them first. It is not neccessary to sterilise both together.
When you have more cash in hand in future, then you can sterilise the other rabbit.

This way, you will not have to worry about over-spending and also spaying/neutering one of them is much cheaper than two of them at one go.

Spaying/Neutering one of them will help solve unwanted pregnancy also.

Spaying/neutering is a very good process and has to reduce lots of health problem or complication when they are much older.

But may i remind you, spaying/neutering doesn't stop them from mating. They will still mate like before. Afterall, the opposite sex attracts. http://petshub.com/ubb/smile.gif But need not worry, because after sterlisation, no unwanted pregnancy will ever occur.

Good luck!

Try the Animal Welfare League located in Chicago Ridge, although it is a bit further south than you mentioned. Or, try phoning your local animal control or local humane society and ask them about low cost/discounted spay/neutering programs. I agree with the above post. It would be much cheaper and easier to just neuter the male rabbit. The best of luck.

Try the Chicago House Rabbit Society. They can either spay/neuter both your buns, or they can recommend a good vet who can. You can find out more information about them through the House Rabbit Society. http://www.rabbit.org Spaying and neutering is a good choice, it decreases the risk of cancers and benign tumours (espesically in females) and of course, it decreases in unwanted babies. And if the rabbits still um, try to mate afterwards, it's ok because it is just a display of dominance/submissiveness. The females often are the ones on top. Good luck with your new rabbits! http://petshub.com/ubb/smile.gif
