I have a 9 year old beagle/basset hound. The last week or so, he has really been biting himself alot in one spot on his thigh. If I try to look at it he wants to bite me...the skin around it is all red and I see a little bit of dried blood. He's also got another spot that is the same way on his tail.

What's wrong here? I can't tell if it's red and bloody because he's been biting it, or because something else bit him. What should I do? I can't really afford to take him to the vet right now. Should I get one of those lamp shade things so that he can't keep biting it?

check for fleas sound like a flea bite dermititis one flea bite with cause them to chew till bloody and raw , I use advantage on my dogs , If he continues he can get secondary skin infections if you have to put an elizabeathin collar on him to heal up the site. If he chew too bad take to the vet to get anti-itch medication. :D :D :D

yea you should get those lamp shade things and i think he's biting because there is something rong with his thigh. If you can't afford a vet, call you local animal shelter or do something fast! before the biting gets worse!!

The lamp shade thing is called an "elizabeathin collar".

Sounds like a allergic reaction to fleas, or a "hot spot". Either way give the doggy a nice bath, make sure if there are fleas to get rid of them quick. And put some neosporin on the ouchy. I had a ointment that was just for this, it stopped itching, it was antibactirial. I had a cat with a very bad FAD (Flea Allergy Dermititis) and found with Flea treatment this stuff helped to stop her from itching and loosing her fur. I cannot remember the name, But I'm betting there are other products like it at your local Pet Store.

Good Luck and hope your doggys feeling better soon!

My dog did it for the longest time to a point where it would bleed. Its like an itch they cant get to.... you know when you get a bit it itches alot? Well they cant itch it with their legs obviously so they use their teeth...the vet gave us some kind of spray lotion to sooth it for her.

Alright, I gave him a bath today. Didn't find any fleas. One of the spots looks alot worse, now it's covered in puss. As soon as I put warm water on it he wanted to kill me. What exactly should I be looking for at the pet store to put on him? I not only can't afford a vet right now, but he also HATES strangers. He would have to be knocked out before the vet could even look at the spots...

I think at this point, if there is puss, you will have to take your dog to the Vet. If he's agressive with them, they will probably muzzle him.
If you start placing these spray on an infection (it's no longer a rash now) it could make it worse.
Please take your dog to see the vet so they can treat him.

Good Luck.
