My uncle told me that canned food is not good for my cats because it has parasites in it. Is this true? If so what can I do if my cats won't eat the dry food?

Hi animallover,

It depends on the freshness of the canned food. If it is expired, surely there are some bacteria. But if it is a new and fresh can it is alright. Always check the cans for a stamped date at the bottom of the can. I think it is not a good idea to eat canned food, as it contains far too much preservatives. It is very unhealthy for cats or any other pets. I always feel that canned food is used to mix with pellets to lure the pet to eat the pellets. http://petshub.com/ubb/wink.gif You can add some fresh canned food in it or some boiled chicken.

Thanks Garfield! I'll try that. Canned food is messy and stinky anyway.

It is always better to feed any animal dry food. It is better for their teeth and their digestion. With TC, I have to feed her atleast 1/2 can of canned food everyday, or she looses weight, but she has all the dry food she can eat.

As far as parasites, like Garfield said, as long as it is fresh it should be fine. I have never had any problems with canned food. http://carsue.homestead.com/files/Kitty.gif

Hi animal lover (and Garfield and Nightmare)
My vet told me its best not to feed my cat canned food because it contains lots of spices! (well thats the translation of the word he used but I think he means artificial flavouring). Saying that though my mum has always fed her cats on canned food and they are fine. I'm sure canned food doesn't contain parasites- unless you keep an opened can hanging around out of the fridge for a long time.
