Hi, as most of you know I am going to be getting a kitty real soon. :cheeky: I went to the pet shop today and bought a harness. I also saw a scratch post for $12.99 and a litter box with pooper scooper for a cheap price. I am not going to cap that kitten's nails as of yet. :o I am going to train the kitty to scratch the post not the furniture. What is the procedure and how long does it take? :bored:

well, I didn't have to train our lot of cats, we just bought this "Smart Kittie" scraching post, it has cat nip on the bottem, and it's card board, plus it doesn't cost a lot.

Just put the kitten on it, and you pretend that your scatching it, you know, rub your fingertips up and down, and hopefully, they'll copie.

yeh jus get a shoelace or a peice of string and make it go up the post, ur kiten will grab it and feel the post and they will usually start scratching at it.

I bought my kitten a scratcher from petsmart, its shaped like a slope, so when she scrathing , she going up the hill :o Anyways its one of those cardboard ones with honeycomb, plus catnip included thats one of the reasons why my cats love it so much. I think the brand is Whisker City.

LOL My cats hated those scratch poles but they loved those welcome mats that are placed outside. And I bought three different kinds of scratch poles for them. They still look brand new. Each cat has his/her own taste and trust me you cannot train them to love them. They do not even care for the tree I have for them. Okay so I own weird pets. LOL

If your cat for some reason doesn't use the post like it's supposed to (like our first one didn't), turn it on it's side. The kitty will start climbing on it and will catch on when it's horizontal. After he gets used to that, turn it vertical and you should have no problem.

Also, take his paws and SHOW him how to use it - this may help, too.
