I would adopt kittens from the humane society and older ones too... and sell them in the store... MUHAHAHA the public would never know the difference! And then when those kittens were sold, i would adopt more from the humane society.... why don't pet stores just do this anyways?

Yeah, I don't know if this is possible. I would want to do the same as you but I guess its just the way it is. People are greedy for money and care more then a poor dying life.

Great idea! That way you're helping find homes for the animals that really need them. :)

Yeah, that would be a great idea! I hate what my mom and dad did, they bred cats, but now I see, we already have soooo many poor kitties in need of a good home, and doggies too, and of coures, ferrets, to many fuzz butts in shelters!

Because a pet store has no buisness selling animals.

If you owned a pet store what you should do is offer your assistance to the shelters and rescues in finding homes. Giving them the space to hold adoptions and other ways to help.

I know a pet store that sometimes has cats, kittens and occasionally a dog/puppy. Not by using mills, but by using the local shelter. It's actually an adopt-a-center, but they get some money from doing this service. The SuperPet in London, Ontario.

Your idea is great burnthalo. Having an adopt-a-center at your pet store would definitely help your local shelters.

But, I'd be willing to buy certain animals at pet stores, but only if it meets my requirements (health of animals, cleanliness of cages/aquariums, number and type of animals, cleanliness of store, type and price of products, etc). I definitely would never buy a cat or dog from a pet store, unless they are from a shelter/rescue that the pet store is trying to help out by promoting adoption.

Anyway, there are pet stores out there that help out the local shelters…either by using their own space to showcase the animal or by having a bulletin board. If you do plan on having a pet store, good luck.

Take Care!

cool! :) when I get older, I'm using my trustfund from my grandmother to start a BIG, BIG shelter, which I take animals who were hurt by people, or abandoned, and give them homes, I don't care much for money, all money does is buy stuff, but here are some very importand things you can't or shouldn't buy...... Friendship, Love, Life, Death, and of course, Imagination.

I had the same idea for smaller animals- ferrets, rabbits, hamsters, rats, etc. I'd make me own brand of pet food and toys! That would be fun. One pet store in Akron, Pets Pajamas( which recently had a yorkie pup stolen from there) brings mixed breed puppies from the pound and sells them.

No i'm not going to open a petstore. I was just thinking of a way that petstores could become 'un-evil' .

I'm going to be a nurse, no time to run a store ;)

lol, yeah, being a nurse is a LOT of work, but it's for another good cause.

There's a petstore near me that gets cats and kittens from shelters and then jumps the price up. the owner would pay like 30 for a kitten and then sell that same kitten for 189 or more! theres two cats in there that have been in a 2X2 cage for over a year now! I want them but i don't want to spend 400 on them! Plus I don't have that kind of money. If i did I would actually probably buy them jsut to get them outta there. Supposedly they are pure breeds but i know they arent just by looking at them. The owner also looks in the paper for "free kittens". I think she's cold and heartless because those cats are soooo mistreated! and the puppies come from puppy mills and are always sick!

I do not think that is right to charge a shelter/rescue for the use of the store. Shelters and rescues are non profit organsations. For one they are a tax right off for anything the store donates and also the customers who adopt from the adoption center generally give back to the store by buyng supplies there.

If a place sells puppies and or kittens (dogs or cats) I will not shop there. But not only that I will save my recipts from were I do shop and send them a letter explaining my position against he selling of dog/cats. The recipts show them my loyal buisness to another competitor and I explain that I would shop them if they no longer sold pups/cats.

I try o avoid the places with pocket pets as well but not always possible. So I inspect the pocket pets and if clean/care for I will shop there if need be.

PetSmart has adoption centers in it's stores that's usually occupied full time by the local shelter, then most Saturdays it has "adoption days" where other shelters in that area come in for the day with their pets. As far as I know, PetSmart (and maybe some Petcos) is the only chain-petstore that does this kind of thing.

Yes petsmart and Petco both hold adoption days. Some petsmarts here have there adoption centers full thru out the week, others and Petco usally have them on weekends.

We have a few indepentant stores that hold adoptions on the weekends also.

Why not just start your own shelter?

I was thinking petsmart too. the one near me always has cats and rabbits and sometimes ferrets from the SPCA. Also on weekends they bring dogs and puppies from the SPCA for adoption. From what I've seen at least with the dogs, it seems like many that are brought to the store are adopted. Hey, if I didn't already have a dog I probably would've adopted some of them too.

Thats sort of what petsmart and petco does. I know that petsmart sells homeless cats and dogs. I know that petco sells homeless dogs but I'm not sure if they do that with cats. You could actually start your own business like that, but it'd take alot of work and money :( .

Petsmart doesn't actually sell the dogs / cats.. they offer space to local shelters and assist them in adopting the animals out. There's an adoption fee, but you'll find that with any good rescue program.

Where I live, the local Petsmart has a permanent in-store adoption area that's open 7 days a week. They're doing a wonderful service for the shelters here, because most of the area shelters are very small, and don't have the space or means to house all the animals surrendered. Thanks to the Petsmart, cats are no longer euthanized here for these reasons. Euthanasia for surrendered cats has dropped to 4% since they partnered up.. only animals who are suffering, FIV+, or judged as dangerous / absolutely unadoptable due to severe, uncontrollable behavior issues are put down. I'm not crazy about the fact that they sell animals, but I like what they've done for the cats. :)

Our Petco holds adoptions on the weekends, but they still suck.

The answer to your question (why pet stores don't just adopt shelter animals and sell them) is because you CAN'T. When you adopt an animal from a shelter, that shelter will usually ask you to sign several agreements. You must agree to not sell or breed the animal, and if you ever want to have the animal leave your possession, it needs to go back to the shelter and nowhere else. If you adopted an animal and sold it, you'd be violating that agreement. Shelters check up on the adopted animals for months and even years after they find a new home to make sure that that home is safe and healthy. I think you're better off hosting adoption days or allowing a shelter space in your store as an adoption center (like Petsmart). That way the animals still lure people into the store, and if they DO adopt an animal, they'll likely buy all the necessary items from you.
