I'm going on an EXTREMELY long road trip(I'm moving from Michigan to Alaska, about 4000 miles) and my cat isn't a very good rider. I've gotten sedatives from the vet but I can only give her one a day so I was wondering if there's anything else I can do to calm her down. I've bought catnip and some toys for her but other than that I'm not sure what to do. I don't really want to let her out of her carrier because if we have to stop suddenly she could get hurt and also I'm going to have three other carriers in the car(2 guinea pigs, 2 ferrets, and a hamster) and I don't really want her walking on their carriers and getting them riled up. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

Wow that is a long journey. I guess it will take you over a week and you will be stopping off each night.

Is there anyone who could look after your cat till you arrive in Alaska and then send your kitty to you by plane. I think it would be worth it if there is any way you could arrange it. Cats don't travel well. I took my cat in my car on a 6 hour journey when I moved house. I let her free in my car as I couldn't stand the meowing. She was ok after that and quite enjoyed sitting looking out of the window. I wouldn't recommend it though as at one point she came round the dash board and over the steering wheel and I had to drag her over to the otherside of the car- I got very scratched!
Let me know what you decide.

There's no way I'd send her by plane as I've heard too many stories of pets dying in transit. Taking her with us is really the only way to get her up there. Actually we're not stopping every night, that's expensive. I guess I'll just have to hope that she calms down and sleeps most of the trip. Thanks though. : )

I wouldnt give her catnip, why excite her. I give you credit for taking all your pets with you, some people would just leave them behind, sorry to say but I read it all the time. I would just try to comfort all of them the best you can. I think you'll know what to do as you drive along. Just be very careful when you do make some pit stops, dont open any cages. I'm sure they will all be fine, sounds to me that you love them all to much to let anything happen. Good Luck & God Speed

Yes I definately do love all my animals : ) I was planning on getting a collar and tag for her before we go just in case she should happen to get away from us. Actually catnip doesn't excite her, it makes her act practically dead. ( c : Thanks!
