Very Important Question

Hi! I've been doing a lot of research over the net as I want to buy a pet pig. I have found an ideal one that wont reach over 9 kg which is perfect.

However, everybody says that the main issue when getting a pig is making sure that you have a vet with experience with pet pigs. I asked my local vet if he had experience and he claimed that "Pet pigs are often treated in the same way humans would, they suffer similar diseases and can use the same medication." Is this true???

9 kg? that's bull... I think... what kind of pig is this? I have a minnature pot belly and he's gunna grow to be at LEAST 60 pounds probably

Pigs, a Handbook of the Breeds of the World by Valerie Porter (copyright 1993, Cornell) states that Vietnamese potbellied pigs wiegh 90-100 kg (198-220 lbs.) Although potbellied pig breeders have tried to breed down the weight and size of potbellied pigs, the vast majority still weigh an average of 125 lbs. Some breeders have developed a strain of "micro-minis" which average between 9-11 lbs. at nine months of age; however, we have never heard of one of these pigs living past eighteen months of age.

ummm....I have a 6 month old pot belly that weighs 28 lbs. right now...and she is suppose to be relatively small as pot bellies go. Her parents are both the equivalent size of a 40-45 lb. dog...although they weigh much more than 40-45 lbs. When I was "doing my homework" before I got my piggie, I read that when breeders try to breed to get the "micro-mini's", they don't live very long because their internal organs don't necessarily stop growing??? ...doesn't really make sense to me...but that is what I read. I can't imagine any pot belly only weighing 9 kg...unless there was something wrong with it. Good luck with your search...Lea :o

I have a 2 year old and he weighs at least 150 , compare that to 9 kg, hehe. He has been the same size now for a year.

The only thing you need is wormer, and it comes in a syrup called IVOMEC or already on the feed called pig wormer. my vet told me he needed no other shots since he is the only pig.

I give him asprin if he isn't feeling well and he gets Pet Gaurds Yeast & Garlic Tablets for cats & dogs and also some oils I give him PetGaurds Skin & Coat supplement which is wheat germ oil and vitamins. You can give your pig a childrens vitamin a day too.
