This is mainly for Figaro, and AnimalLover. In a recent Chat conversation I said that cats and rabbits can inter breed. I have seen what was called a "cabitt", but have recently read up on the topic and realize that I was misled. (But I am gulible){and I can't spell wither}

Anyway. Here is part of the article which I read that describes the cabbit and what it really is.

Given the similarities between cats and rabbits and their make up, I still beleive it would be possible to breed them, but like this article says, and what I have seen, I would not want to. If this animal is what would be produced, it would be a very sad thing.

[...] "Winged" cats with flaps of fur hanging from the shoulders have been reported on several occasions. "Cabbits" with rabbit-like hind legs appear to be malformed Manx-type cats. Kangaroo Cats with very short front legs have occurred, possibly an expression of the Munchkin gene. [...] Other deformities include extra legs, extra tails, dwarfism. In general, the associated health problems make these traits undesirable."

In "The Ethics of Breeding for Deformity" I wrote:

"Nature sometimes makes genetic mistakes. [...] 'Cabbits' are genetic quirks (often, but not exclusively, found in the Manx breed) where the hind end resembles that of a rabbit rather than a cat. One sometimes reads queries in magazines asking 'What are Cabbits? Where can I find a breeder?'. Someone somewhere may currently be considering the breeding of Cabbits to meet the novelty-value market."

Thanks everyone. I Just feel it is important to admit when I am wrong.

Hi

i munckin cat, I really dislike, the poor thing can't do half the things a normal type ca can, like scratch its ears properly, jump up as far, and it runs backwards quicker than it can forwards! As I read about the cabbit, I thought 'its a type of manx cat' with extra long hind legs to front legs. Why do they breed these things, I know deformities happen, like the 'winged' cat, with extra skin flaps. but when delibraty breed these defomities and they can't do things as a normal cat can I really feel sorry for them. I mean I know in humans their are things that go wrong, but we don't go around making someone that has been born with extra short legs to have children with someone who is basically a siamese twin, if they decide to have children thats up to them, of course, we don't make them, where as deformities in animals, breeders do(if you know what I mean) i hate those poor cats that her born with no nose 'leathers' cause they are too typey, they have breathing problems, eatting problems etc and are often paired up to less ype cats in order to get flat faced cats like in the persian.
I won't keep show self Black cavies, because they are getting to the stage where they are getting ahuge hump on their shoulders, very round, short nosed and not breeding well, lots of lost litters and mothers. and are getting tiny. mind you I hate to see any animal that ended up with a flat face and head, but thats me, some people totally love them and adore them.

re : cabbits
i too have had this arguement before with someone in another chatroom,after asking at the local animal research labs i was told that these two animals would not breed as they are two different species entirely and are not related in any way.
