So, not just on the forums I frequent, but on the others...I've noticed a lot of people asking breeding questions, or stating they are going to/have bred such animal. So many of these people obviously lack the knowlege and experiece they should have, but of course they only hear what they want and rarely respond ot honest or sound advice.

Sigh.

I suppose this was more of a rant than anything.

I totally agree. Remember, just because the little babies look cute and furry, they cost money, need attention, and take a lot of time to care for.

I agree with you totally. People think just because they are small and cute that they want some, then when they grow up, they want rid of them. Or they sell them for food  I currently have a litter of baby mice, but I've been to this class about it that local "highly recommened" breed holds for awareness. And I also had good homes for them. I made sure they were going to have good, responsible homes before I even bred them.

When i read yor message it reminded me of when i first started breedig Rats, as i had alot of people telling me i was crule, and didn't care for my Rats, which really upset me. My resons for breeding are purly for health and temperment. Oh, and my own pleasure of corse! i feel so strongly about this subject and wish that people who intend on breeding do ALOT of research before hand and no all the pro's and con's before hand.
Please take my advise anyone intending to breed!!!

I heard a really sad story of a woman who adopted two sisters, molly and dolly.
Dolly died in her arms from a dysfunctional liver, and tests showed that it was genetic. Her sister became incredibly distraught and tore the cage apart looking for Dolly, even though they had another cagemate.

Thats such a sad story!
I've never bred animals nor do I intend to but once my cat had kittens and honestly, I prefer adult cats to those little troublemakers!

Honestly I do not understand people who breed any animal, whether its dogs, cats, horses, whatever, its just not right. Most of the people who breed think they're doing a great thing by improving the breed etc, and that these animals will find a loving home.. but really can you guarantee it 100%?, can you be sure that the animal you sold will have the best home?, and what happens, if the new owner moves or gets sick, can you guarantee that the animal will find a good home after that? most of the animals who started out well, end up in the shelters and on the streets, why would you want to be the one who makes that happen? People need to remember that BREEDING CONTRIBUTES LARGELY TO PET OVERPOPULATION. Its that simple. I have nothing else to say.

I think maybe, I should have been a little clearer..

There are people who come on here (mostly kids) and because they have a male and female of whatever, they want babies. Usually they don't bother to do any reseach and you see posts like "OMG two days ago Sally had babies and half of them are dead what do I do?" Then when you tell them what they've done is most likely unethical, or what they are planning to do isn't right...they get deeply offended.

There's a huge difference between that, and responsible breeding.

Irresponsible breeding contributes to overpopulation...as do feral animal populations and ignorant or just plain uncaring owners.

yes. that makes sense. do these kids say anything about what their parents are doing about the male+female situation? when I got my cat I couldnt afford to get her spayed so I made a deal with my mom. She even payed for my cat's medical bills for a year after I moved out.

it is not the kids that bother me as much as the freaking parents. they take couple of horses, throw them in their backyard and call themselves breeders.... and i hate those parents that have kids that ride. ( alot of the kids that i teach have parents like this) they want to breed horses so that their little sally will have a horse to ride. beginners shouldn't be riding green horses anyway.........grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr this makes me so angry. i just wish that there had to be a class and a permit (that you HAD to pay for) before you could start breeding ANYTHING!!! EVEN HUMANS!!!!

I occasionally breed my gerbils but only to get good quality ones up here. The pet stores and other people interested in them don't know genetics and end up producing all one bland color that no one wants. I produce very healthy, tame, and friendly babies that get adopted quickly. I also rescue lots of critters and believe that most people should not breed. I have been getting out of breeding lately and trying to find some of the rescued ones homes. I rescued over 38 gerbils (put a stop to my breeding when I realized that many needed homes), 2 rabbits, 1 mouse, 2 rats, 11 degus, and a puppy. I believe in helping animals. I made the decision to breed two of my gerbils after owning some for 4 years. I then bred a couple of mines once or twice and found the babies homes. I still live with my parents and they are fine with me rescuing. I really hate it when people don't do their research. I research any animal extensively until I can repeat all their main facts before even looking at adopting or rescuing one.

Also, none of the rescue ones came from any of my lines. I also keep any that don't find homes and give them a great life.

it is great to hear that some people on this website are actually responsible. i have quit coming around here latley because i either give advice and get yelled at by 12 year olds or i have stupid people on here that breed their animals for pleasure and stupidity.
