My cat has a long line down the center on her back where she has lost some fur. I think she is licking herself excessively in that area as it's often wet. Anyone know what could be wrong?

Hello, i sqw on emergency vets that this 1 year old cat was losing it's hair because of a worm underneath the skin. so i t could be a worm or a tick. u should take her to the vets just to be totally sure!

Thanks sassycat!
I was really pleased someone had replied to my post.
Actually I have already taken her to the vet and he told me its probably a flea alergy or possibly a food deficiency http://petshub.com/ubb/frown.gif So he gave me a (pump)spray which I used and which she hated of course. He told to me cook for her for a few days!! (chicken)He also gave me a syrup (for the alergy)which I am suposed to give her twice a day for a week by squirting it into her mouth with a syringe. Well I just about managed to give it to her about three times after a lot of fuss and most it dribbling out of her mouth and on to the floor. So I've decided to try and salvage the reasonably good reationship I still have with my cat and not force feed her the syrup unless the problem persists.
Anyone have any tips on giving stuborn, suspicious kitties their medicine????
Garfield
04-24-01, 02:28 AM 04-24-01
Robbie, as for the syrup, i think you could use a syringe and pump a little at the <b>side</b> of her mouth. Not sure if this works for your cat or not though.
Another way is you dilute the syrup, so that it doesn't taste too bad for your cat.
Robbie
04-25-01, 06:36 AM 04-25-01
Garfield- That's a good idea about diluting the syrup I may have to try this as I noticed last night that she is still spending most of her cleaning time licking the fur on her back.
Didn't have much luck with the syringe, she still managed to spit it out. Perhaps a tube down her throat! She's gonna REALLY hate me!
Thanks Robbie
Garfield
04-25-01, 11:39 AM 04-25-01
LOL. No, she won't hate you. She will just hate the syrup.
There is another way which could be helpful. Try opening her mouth and insert the syringe down to the back of her mouth and spray the syrup fast in. But from the way you describe to me, i think your cat really hate the syrup. http://petshub.com/ubb/wink.gif
Another idea, you can try to dip the chicken in some syrup and feed it to her. I think she will have no choice but to eat it, if she loves chicken. LOL.
Keep us posted.
Robbie

Thanks Garfield,
Wow, this is much better than going to the vet.
I've spayed her again with the stuff http://petshub.com/ubb/frown.gif If she continues licking her back i'm gonna try your dipping chicken in syrup idea but a more likely one is the opening her mouth and squirting it down, after all she won't even eat tuna fish if it's got half a piece of worm pill in it!! What a little madam, and to think she was hungry street kitten when I got her!
I think I understand from the "lol" that you are American?
Thanks again
Garfield

Hi Robbie, i ain't an American. http://petshub.com/ubb/wink.gif
What's your cat's name? As i was reading your message, an idea stuck me again. Since your cat keep licking her back, why not put some syrup on her back? Just a bit will do, just to make prevent her from licking. Hopefully eating some syrup too!
Clean it off after awhile.
I think this will leave her with no choice. Either lick the syrup or don't lick her back. LOL.
Cheers!

Hi Robbie,
I have kois, but no cats. But i like cats a lot though. Thus i like to interact with them a lot.
Do let me know if my idea works on Despina. I hope she will recover from her skin problem. I think if no treated, it will persist.
What other pets do you have besides Despina?
http://petshub.com/ubb/cool.gif
Robbie
04-28-01, 11:08 AM 04-28-01
Hi Garfield,
Despina had a sticky back! Let's see now. She was very cross indeed when she realised that I was not just petting her back while she was eating but was rubbing in wet stuff. UUgghh! She ran outside and didn't come back in for a while.
I put a little of the syrup in her water too but not sure if she's tried it yet. I tried it and I can hardly tell there's syrup in it.
Unfortunately I don't have any other pets. I used to have many when I was a kid but I don't have the room now. I was obsessed with animals and if there had been this web site then I would have been in my element! One day I will have a lot again. Animals make me very happy
What are kois? Are they the same as geese? http://petshub.com/ubb/smile.gif
Your profile doesn't say much! Where do you live?

Hi Robbie!
Kois are fish. They are the bigger type of fishes and has really fantastic markings on them and i think they are really pretty.
If you like you can visit this link which i mentioned a little more about my kois. http://petshub.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000003.html
If i manage to scan some pictures of my kois, i will post to petshub.com and hopefully share with all of you here.
I know it a quite 'funny' that i like cats so much but i don't keep them. Hopefully in the near future, i might keep a few cats in my premises.
I hope Despina is getting better. Any pictures of her?
Despina is really lucky to have you as her owner. You actually tasted the syrup? http://petshub.com/ubb/eek.gif

Hello Garfield,
I read the whole thread of your chat with Tammy and your kois sound lovely. I think I know what they are but it would be nice to see some pictures of your fish if you can send some photos to pets hub.
I liked your face when you read that I tried Despina's syrup ( just a little test to see if I can do it too http://petshub.com/ubb/redface.gif )
Yes I tried the syrup- just a drop, to see what all the fuss was about, not that we have similar taste buds or anything but I was just wondering. Well I must say it was similar to the medicine they give to humans, you know the cough medicine etc, very sweet and even a stronger taste which left an unpleasant taste in my mouth afterwards. Couldn't they at least make it taste just a bit chickeny or beefy!
She never drank the water with the few drops in but this morning I put a few drops in some milk (she adores milk) which she started to drink but then lifted her head up, gave the milk one of her dirtiest looks and ran to the door. However she came back in in the afternoon and drank the rest of the milk!!!! Well, I don't think it's really a good idea to give medication with milk. What do you think? Perhaps I should call the vet and ask him too. I can't believe they give this stupid syrup for cats. Twice a day for a week! Yeah right!

Robbie, it was really heartwarming to know that Despina drank the milk/syrup.
I think it is a great idea to ask your vet if mixing syrup in milk will be an acceptable move or not. I hope it won't harm her, so that you can continue puting some syrups in it. LOL.
As for the face, http://petshub.com/ubb/eek.gif, you can visit this link http://petshub.com/ubb/smilies.html
Despina is allowed to run out of the house? She always come back home after awhile is it?

Thanks Garfield http://petshub.com/ubb/tongue.gif
I'm trying to call the vet but he ain't picking up.
Despina is allowed to go in and out as she pleases. Until I came to live in this country I though it was like that for all cats. Here though it's different, people either seem to "have" a few cats that are really strays which they just feed or they have a cat which is just kept in because they live in an apartment.
Despina sometimes goes out just for an hour or two or it can be the whole day or night. Usually depends on the weather. when she was little she used to go off for a couple of days but she doesn't do that anymore.
What's the situation where you are with cats? Do people let them in and out as they please? Maybe I should start a new thread with this, it's interesting how in different countries people have different ideas about what is aceptable and unacceptable as far as animals are concerned.

Owners try hard to keep their cats in the house, but somehow the cats always managed to find a way out of it. I am not sure if they go home or not.
I think cats are really independent and smart. They really have their own life style. http://petshub.com/ubb/cool.gif

Hi Garfield, (and anyone else trying to get medicine down a VERY difficult cat)
So, I called the vet and she said the syrup is not to be taken in milk but it's ok to mix it in her food. I said there is no chance she's gonna eat it, isn't there an injection she could have so we can finish with this thing. She said no and there is no other solution (except pills)
Despina spends ALL her awake hours in the house cleaning, I wouldn't mind if she helped me clean the house but no, she's only interested in cleaning herself. So I've decided it really is a problem- like you said it won't go away unless treated.
So, from last night she's back on the syrup and I really have to thank you now for your brilliant idea about mixing water with the syrup. Actually I have changed it slightly (you got me thinking) I add a bit of chicken stock cube dissolved in water and put it in the syringe. Well it can't taste that bad now but you would think I was trying to torture her. She is SO strong and agile I couldn't hold her no matter how hard I held her by the scruff of her neck. It took the two of us three attempts to get half of it down her. In the end it was my husband pinning her down on the floor against the wall (less scratching this way)while I did the medicine squirting in her mouth.
This morning we did it again and managed to squirt it all in her mouth although some went on the floor. After I've given it to her I give her some chicken- her favorite and some of her normal food. Hopefully she'll get to know the routine, medicine then food.
Bet you don't have these problems with your kois?
Your right about cats being independant and smart. As far as I know cats which are allowed out always come back, the males though will wander and may not come back if they are unneutered as they are looking for a mate. There are some cats which do disapear but not many.
I'm surprised you don't have a cat with a name like yours and since you have been kind enough to take an interest in my cat you must like them a lot. I hope I haven't put you off them!!
Thanks for reading my long, boring post!
Robbie

Nope Robbie, you haven't put me off a slightest bit at all. It isn't boring at all, and i love long post. In fact, i am engrossed when reading your post.
Oh my goodness, you tasted the syrup, cum chicken stock cube with water again? http://petshub.com/ubb/tongue.gif
I hope Despina will drink it, else all your effort will be gone.
I like cats, but ain't keep any. Hopefully in the future. It is due to my nose allergy actually.
My kois are beautiful and they are really sweet. But occassionally irritating me by splashing water.
I have learnt from you that syrup and milk don't go together. Thanks.
It sounds like all of you are having wrestling with Despina when forcing the syrup down. Your husband pinning her down on the floor against the wall? LOL. LOL.
She doesn't know that she is one very lucky girl to have all of you.
Cheers!
Robbie

Thanks for your kind words. I wasn't surprised when the vet said not to give the syrup with the milk as I had heard before that medication is not to be taken with milk. That goes for us too. I think it something to do with the fact milk prevents proper absorbtion in the stomach. I believe the same thing goes if you drink a glass of milk and then alcohol, you don't get so drunk http://petshub.com/ubb/wink.gif
I couldn't bring myself to try the syrup with the chicken stock cube yuck! I just hope it tasted better for cats. No of course she won't drink it. This is the concoction I squirt down her throat with the syring. I have deep claw pricks and scratches all over my right hand http://petshub.com/ubb/frown.gif . Thought about trimming her claws but there is no chance madam will allow that. Gonna buy a pair of gardening gloves.
How many kois do you have? Do you have names for them? I think I remember reading you keep them inside? How big is their tank?
Garfield

Hello Robbie,
How's Despina getting on?
I have got 2 kois. They are really lovely. Their tanks are quite big for them, as they can flip and turn when they are happy. Flipping and turning for kois are common, especially when they are happy or playing.
I keep them inside. So that i can see them everyday. Having them in my sight makes me feel so good and calm.
I do hope that Despina hasn't hurt you too much with her scratches. Any progress with her skin so far? Take care.

I've had to give my cat syrup medicine when he was sick. He did NOT like it, but he didn't fuss too much, either. I just held him tightly, and squirted it SLOWLY into the corner of his mouth...he was too busy licking it to spit it out. Maybe your cat makes such a fuss because you give her the syrup too quickly? My vet had told me to feed it to my cat (Meeko) slowly, so he wouldn't have much to spit out, and so he wouldn't choke on a flow of yucky medicine. It worked for me.
I also have Koi. I've owned more than 30 Koi in the past 4 years. My biggest Koi was more than 2 feet long. She was a beautiful golden Koi. She got ill and died though, this year. =\ But at the moment, I'm preparing to get rid of most of my fish. I'm getting rid of 4 large Kois (about a foot long, each. Patches is 1 1/2 feet long though) and 2 pretty big algae eaters.
My cat, Meeko, has also had a balding problem at one time. Not a big one. We found a large patch of fur missing on his side. We never did find out what it was. It looked almost as though he had run into something which scraped his fur off. It was very strange. What was even stranger was that we later noticed the same exact thing had happened to a rabbit's foot. You know, one of those rabbit feet. Stuffed, but with real fur on the outside. It's become a kitty toy, and we noticed a month after Meeko's fur had grown back that the same shape and size of bald spot was on the rabbit's foot. Odd, no? Never did figure it out!
Good luck with your cat and her problems, Robbie.
Robbie

Hi Garfield and Roz
Fish are very peacful to watch aren't they! Quite theraputic.
Roz- Thanks for the help. Actually I was trying to squirt it bit by bit like you said and she did lick some but it was SO unbelievably difficult to hold her.
Happily I have found that she will actually eat turkey which I have put her dose of syrup on so I'm not squirting it in her mouth anymore. I've also been putting a little on her back were she licks. The only problem is is that she will only eat it on raw turkey (yuck) and I'm not sure whether or not it's ok to feed her so much raw meat.
So far there is no change in the fact that she licks herself all the time, especially on her back. http://petshub.com/ubb/frown.gif
That's weird about the cat and the rabbit foot. It reminds me of stories I've heared about people having accidents which have left the same scar in the same place as the persons mother or granmother. Who knows!!

You could try wrapping her in a towel, like a baby, just make sure that her front legs are in a down position instead of her paws up beside her face. Have your husband hold her while you give her the medicine. This worked for me with my dogs, raccoons and chinchillas. Also, you can buy empty gelatin casings for capsules. Possibly you could load them yourself with the syrup and give her the pill...assuming you know how to shove it down her throat and make her swallow?...put it as far down the back of her mouth and lift her head so it is tilting back. Then stroke her throat gently from top to bottom. This makes her swallow.
Robbie

Hello Robbie,
Sad to know that Despina's isn't getting better and still needs to visit the vet to get more medications.
Do you think you should seek another vet for second opinion? Not that i am saying your current vet isn't good, but sometimes there are other vets who have better medications.

I was going to take Despina to the vet last week but then she came on heat (even though she has been neutered) So at the moment she is more interested in other things than scratching herself!! Years ago I had a long haired cat that would get infected from licking so much. The vet said she had an allergy to fleas, and the flea sprays and collars didn't help.
He put her on a pill that she took twice a day, It didn't keep the fleas from biting her, but it kept her from licking so much. At the time, since it came from my forever trusted vet, I didn't think there could be any thing wrong with it, However, I later found out the the pill affected her nervous system. She should have lived to be an old cat, but this pill shortened her life span and she died when she was only 4.
I'm not sure where you are located, but what I use now for all my animals is a liquid called Frontline. It kills the fleas and ticks for atleast a month. My cat now, T.C. has never been happier, especially since we have a major flea problem in our yard.
I hope by now things have worked out for Despina, but if not, maybe you can try the frontline. Watch out for too many med's the vet wants to give you. It could have long term effects that the vet might not even know about.

PS Good Job of the Picture.

Hi Garfield and Nightmare,
Nightmare, very interesting about your cat that had the same problem. It's so sad that she died so young. Despina is seven. Yes it is Frontline the stuff that the vet gave me. Actually I have just remembered that the vet also told me to put a flee collar on her which I totally forgot about.
Garfield, about Despina being neutered. This confused me in the beginning when she came onto heat after the op and I told my vet about it thinking maybe the operation had been done wrong! He said no and that this will still happen for a while and he gave her an injection to stop it. The vet was a neighbour of mine but since I was new to this country at the time (Greece) I couldn't speak much Greek at the time and he couldn't speak any English so I never found out then why this happened. Well I could guess but when I moved house and took her to the new vet for her injections I asked him and sure enough he told me that the other vet had obviously removed only her womb and not her ovaries. He also explained to me that some vets choose to do this for the health of the cat and that there are benefits to be gained by their bodies still 'running normally'. As for having boyfriends the vet has assurred me there is nothing she can catch but I still try to keep her in as it's not very nice to see her being jumped on.
I'm glad you like Despinas picture. Nightmare has a great idea for a website. How about a picture of your kois! http://petshub.com/ubb/smile.gif

I think Frontline is a very good product for skin problems. I think it would soon cure Despina's problem in no time.

Hello Garfield
I took Despina to the vet again yesterday. She made a big fuss about going in her kitty-carrier and a horrid meow all the way in the car. So I felt STRESSED. When we got there there were loads of dog and poor Despinas face was http://petshub.com/ubb/eek.gif
Anyway the vet said he thought it was a flea alergy as she also had some little red things on her skin which she doesn't have now and her skin is fine. So he now thinks it may be a food deficiency... not that what I feed her is wrong but that she needs something extra which she is missing. So he's going to call me today to tell me what it is she needs and I will put it in her food for 10 days to see if she's better. Well he said it's nothing serious anyway but if this thing to put in her food doesn't work then there's nothing else really to do. So I guess we'll see.
OK let's see if the picture works for me!

You can also try Velcote. It is a really good oil for skin and coat of pets. My dog eats it and has tremendouwly improved it skin and coat.
Also, another brand Frontline is good for preventing fleas and ticks.

When The picture of Despina was taken she was very gentle and I had never heard her growl or spit. Unfortunately all that changed when I moved house and it obviously really upset her and she's never been as nice since then. Well I still love her and she still looks just as cute... especially when she's sleeping.
Nightmare- what pets do you have?
Garfield- where are your kois then? Oh yes and I still have no idea which side of the world you are posting from. I have a feeling you are either from Germany or Singapore!!!!!????? http://petshub.com/ubb/cool.gif

I have a Cat named TC. Can't get a good picture of her, she won't sit still long enough.
I've had all sorts in the past. I really love animals. It was a joke in our family when one of those nature shows would come on, I'd want one of what ever they were showing.
Have always wanted a monkey, but haven't ever been able to get one. My husband would kill me now, if I got one.

Ha Ha,
I'm the same, I've always loved soft cuddly things. I was animal mad when I was young and I had lots of pets (actually I had some non cuddly ones too). I was also responsible for the pets in our science lab at school and managed to get out of going outside into the cold at break times for two years! I still melt when I see cute furry creatures. My mum always said I'm much more sympathethic and kinder to animals than I am to people. Well I try to be nice to people to but there is this strange difference in the fact that I like most animals but I don't like most people...only about half! Oh but I like everyone at this site especially on this thread but we come here cause we all have something in common... we love animals.

I like this site too. I feel like I have actually made friends here. I don't have alot of friends, I guess I am anti social or something.
I have had my computer for a year and a half, but this is the first community I feel like I can belong to. Like you said we all love animals here and I think that is my strongest characterist. Like you I am better to any animal than I am to most people. {with the one exception to anykind of bug, spider etc.}
I like the fact to that we are all from different countries. It makes me feel like I travel to say I chat with someone in Greece, or Singapore, or Scottland. Makes me feel important.
Love you Guys
Nightmare
PS: I read the heading on your other post and nearly had a heartattack. Had to get there to make sure it wasn't Despina that was missing. Isn't that strange. I am attached to a cat half way around the world.

Hi everyone,
So nice to meet you all in the chat room yesterday I was so surprised to catch everyone there.
Despina seems to be a little better and at least her fur loss problem doesn't seem to be getting any worse! She seems to be licking herself slightly less although as I write she is sitting on a chair on my patio licking herself. I'm off to the chemist now to get her new medicine.

Hi everyone,
I've just stumbled onto this site and love it! I have the same problem with my cats. Smokey lost half of his fur on his back. It's better now, but he still has bald/balding patches. When Salem got very sick last year and had to stay inthe hospital, he came back full of fleas [he's jet black and I didn't know until I notice the rest scratching] I used Advantage spot-on, it's the same as Frontline spot-on. They are both manufactured by Bayer. Bayer stopped selling Advantage when they came out with Frontline. I used the spot-on as it's easier than spraying all my cats. {I have a few} Within 2 weeks, all gone!!
Anyway, it seems that Smokey's problem is not the fleas. The fleas are gone and he's still losing his fur. No new family member added. Not diet problems. Even my vet is stumped. Now, I just leave him alone and his fur is growing back slowly but I long to see him in his natural crowning glory. If someone can tell me how to upload a pix, you'll understand what I mean by his natural crowning glory.
Sandra
P.S. Smokey is not the only with fur loss.

Hi Catlady and everyone,
Now I can write the conclusion to this topic and hopefully help catlady's cats too.
Despina's fur has now grown back completely and she no longer seems to be totally obsessed with cleaning herself either.
The product my vet told me to buy is PRECIUM by MEDIFELIS- Cat products.
I have been putting 1ml of this fishy smelling oil into her food each day and not only has her fur grown back but it's so silky now too. Despina's fur has always been quite britle in comparison to my mums cats who are really fluffy, now it's much softer. Must be the oil! I can definitely recommend it. The vet also said it's good to put a few drops of olive oil in animals food too- full of vitimins.

Hi Garfield,
Nice to hear from you again. I'm fine and so is Despina now exept for the fact that I now have a dog in my yard which she is not too keen on ( she attacked him once)
Thanks for all your advice and encouragement http://petshub.com/ubb/smile.gif I will chat to you in another thread. I'll still be posting at Pets hub sometimes.

Hi Robbie,
Thanks for the tip. I'll ask my vet about getting it. I hope it'll help Smokey and the rest of my babies. Will keep you informed of amy developments. I'm trying to post Smokey's pix in the gallery. Hope I get it right. Thanks again.
