3 days ago, I picked up my hampster, aka "Hammie" and I noticed he had gooy green poop under his tail region. I took him to the Vet the next day and they said he had a bacterial infection that causes excessive diareaha or generally speaking "Wet Tail". There are many different causes for this condition, improper cage cleaning, stress, etc. The vet looked for stool samples in his cage to check for parasites just in case, but no fresh ones were available. The vet then gave me two medicines, one was Pepto Bismol, believe it or not, and the other an anti-bacterial medication in convient droppers. Also while at the vet they gave Hammie an injection of fluid under the skin to hydrate him from loosing some fluids through the diareaha. I give Hammie 2 drops of each medicine every 12hrs. Its really simple because he likes the flavor of the medicine and he just licks it right of of the dropper when I put it to his mouth. Hammie is considered in his senior years, although to me his still a baby I've only had him for 11months now. He is doing rather well since the medication and I'm glad I took him to the vet it was the most responsible decision.
Other symptoms I eximined BEFORE/Prior to the medication:
Green/watery poop smudges in cage
Odor from his bedding area
Weakness in the hind legs
Slight hunch back

I will contact the vet if I notice no improvement, I'm keeping my hopes up!

Good for you, my favorit hamster Scratchy died of wet tail simply cus she didn't wanna come out of the wooden house she loved to sleep in, and as a result I never really noticed, since then i never used it. Once they get really close to dying here are the symptoms:

Literally falling down, rolling over.
Eventual inability to stand altogether
Labored breathing, jaws very noticably opening and closing.

It hurt to see her slowly dying before my eyes in my hands, as a little 10 year old. There was no hope for Scratchy but I have a feeling that hammie will pull through, since you are more responsible than I was at 10.

Did the vet not prescribe antibiotics? Baytril is usually given for wettail. I am glad he is doing better. Are you giving him pedialite and cucumber to encourage rehydration? Let us know how he's doing.

These are actually symptoms of dehydration.

Thought you might want to read this on wettail. I trust Lorraine Hill to be the top expert on hamsters. :)
