No matter what, my hamster always makes his bed right behind his wheel....and then when he goes to run on it, he cant because all of this bedding is in the way. So when I clean his cage, I leave his wheel out until he has made his bed, then I put his wheel on the opposite side of the cage...but he ALWAYS moves it!!! Could it be that he feels safer behind something? I am getting really tired of having to move everything around so he can sleep where he wants, and run on his wheel too....any advice? :hamster1: :grumpy:

My suggestion would be to get him a igloo, and put it away from the wheel. Then, he may just sleep where the igloo is. Worked for me.

When I first bought my hamster he automatically slept behind the wheel, when I put an empty toilet roll in there he moved in to that right away and fills it with bedding. He also has a house but he just moved all of the bedding out of there. :p

Perhaps try what I did if its a concern him being behind the wheel.

my 2 syrians like to sleep in a house i made of toilet paper rolls its like the ghetto house but the sleep in it so im happy i just made it of 3 tp rolls cut up down the middle and used 1 for the roof and the other 2 for walls...i used 1 inch wide masking tape to hold it together but they like to chew on it so i have to replace the wall

If they chew the tape you may want to be careful. The adheasive can make them sick.

the tape is only on the top so theyd have to chew the roof off

my hamster had a plastic wheel that connected to the cage but he chewed 3 bars off of it and got his head stuck in the hole!!! (scarriest thing that has ever happened in my life!) so I got him a metal one instead

A friend of mine got her Syrian hammie right before I got our mating pair...hers tends to do the same similar thing...she has that CritterTrail habitat where a ball is attached to a tube on the top of the tank as opposed to using a wheel (and then you can detach the ball and use it around the house as well). He will make SEVERAL trips up that tube with his bedding and some snacks for those midnight cravings and then the next morning when she goes in to check on him, he has bedded in the ball. She tried taking that away by disconnecting the tube and so then he did the same thing, carrying all his bedding and food, up into the "skyview restaurant"...it's funny how he keeps going up the tubes like that and making his bed there.

So then after a couple of days, she decided to give him his ball access back and he was exercising in it when she went to bed that night. Sure enough, first thing in the morning, he had bedded in the ball again! He likes to be up high and in enclosed spaces like that and to this day will do the same thing if given access. She hasn't had him a month yet, so I'm sure she'll eventually figure something out, even if it means attaching a wheel to one of the add-on ports...

Hamsters are so funny...

I read somewhere on this forum that if you keep moving it around that your hammy would eventually give up and see things your way. I think the post was about using the bathroom in a bad spot. Personally I think he needs something cozy and relatively small. One of our hammies uses one of the igloos and he loves it. Our other little guy just piles a bunch of bedding up and digs a small pit then covers himself with toilet paper. It is all about getting them something they feel secure in. If that doesn't work then I guess you could either try to move the wheel if possible or just get your hammie a roller ball so the litte guy still gets his exercise. That is the most important part! They absolutely need to run around. Best of luck and let us know if anything works.

I have two robo's though I had to separate them. One of them is really shy and always sleeps in her house while the other either sleeps in the wheel or makes a nest right in front of it, despite loo rolls, a house and a few other things. I think she's just lazy and wants the wheel on her doorstep! I really wouldn't worry about it. They're all different and it's important that they feel safe. I don't agree with moving their nests all the time becuase it can stress them out. How would you like it if you spend ages arranging things just so and someone kept moving things? Given the scale factor I guess it would be like someone picking up your house and moving it a few streets!

Do you have any compartments when I first got skippy she slept right next to the wheel but putting bedding in the compartments she now sleeps there. I always thought it was a warmth type of thing.

An igloo is basically the same thing as a hamster house, just that it is shaped as an igloo. If he doesn't like the hamster house, I doubt that he would like the igloo, but you can always try! Good Luck! :)
